City break recommendations

Can anyone recommend a city break for us please? For myself, DH and 2 19y-o’s. Have enjoyed Paris, Rome, Prague and New York. The teens aren’t really into museums but would be ok visiting one special one if there was plenty of other stuff to do. Not looking for hot weather, but avoiding non-stop torrential rain would be ideal!

Barcelona has lots of things to do for all ages, & with 4 of you it would be feasible to split into pairs.

I don't think DH has forgiven me for not wanting to see the football ground, after I "dragged" him to see the Sagrada Familia.

Amsterdam!

Probably closer to home than you'd anticipated, but York! We've (me, DS14, DD11) just had a cracking few days there and we only live 45 mins away.

Florence is beautiful. My all time favourite city is Dublin and I go every year but I can't guarantee no rain there I'm afraid!

aftonwater · 06/09/2022 18:01

Copenhagen? The design museum is good and there’s Tivoli too.

Iguanainanigloo · 06/09/2022 18:01

Valencia is brilliant

ScabbyHorse · 06/09/2022 18:01

Seville is lovely.

SunnySusie · 06/09/2022 18:03

If you liked Prague you will love Budapest. So much to do, really cheap once there too as not on euro (and HUF doing v badly this year). Such a fascinating and cool city for 19yos and you. Look up the Terror Háza for a non-boring museum option. Visit fisherman's Bastion for the most instagrammable views for the young ones. And the thermal baths are amazing.

cbatopainttheshed · 06/09/2022 18:04

I'd second Valencia, beautiful city.

One of my best city breaks was Belfast. So much to do and really interesting learning our own recent(ish) history. It's not taught in schools but it definitely should be!

cbatopainttheshed · 06/09/2022 18:07

Belfast you can do the good old hop on and off bus, visit stormont, tour old jail, learn about the peace walls and see the murals, titanic museum and shipyard both really interesting, and a nice city to wander round. Great pubs and restaurants too.

I second Budapest. Or Palma Mallorca is very nice (and you can get the tourist/vintage train/tram down to Soller/Port de Soller for the day). Malaga with a side trip to do the Caminito del Rei maybe? When are you planning on going?

Rapidtango · 06/09/2022 18:16

We've had breaks to both York and Palma, Majorca over the last year . Enjoyed both but amazingly it cost us roughly the same to stay at a beautiful hotel in Palma (including flights) than it did an 'OK' one in York.

Houseplantmad · 06/09/2022 23:11

Lisbon - we went last October and it was fab, and warm. We had a mix of culture, food and beach. Bliss.

hagathachristie · 06/09/2022 23:19

Any hotel/restaurant recommendations? - heading there in the spring

Jumpking · 07/09/2022 07:27

I third Budapest

Thermal spa's. Cheap eats/drinks. Beautiful hills with the children's railway, chair lift, funicular. House of Terror.

Really great city break. One of the few cities I'd be happy to return to-i explore so not keen on the same place twice, but Buda, absolutely

VonWeasel · 07/09/2022 20:53

Some great recommendations on here. For something a bit different how about Bratislava and Vienna? We did Bratislava and then Vienna. Flew in and out of Vienna but it's not far on the bus to Bratislava. You can then get the train to Vienna (or the boat in summer months). The contrast between the two is so interesting, especially leaving the slightly run down communist era train station in Bratislava and then arriving in the new glitzy station in Vienna. We were there in December and had snow. Both really interesting cities.

VonWeasel · 07/09/2022 20:57

Venice is amazing too. Have been in spring, autumn and winter with a mixture of glorious sunshine, mist and rain. All very atmospheric. Not been there when it's badly flooded though.
