4 month old or 10 month old?

Hi,
We are wanting to go away whilst I am on maternity leave. Just all inclusive, somewhere warm but not boiling. Our options are to go soon, with our 4 month old or leave it until next March when she will be 10ish months. Pros and cons for both?!

4 months.
Not mobile (unless you are my oldest!), no solids, easy to transport in a sling, often sleep anywhere.

Babies who want to crawl, and pull to standing and cruise are not fun on planes!

4 months stay where you put them.
10 months could easily crawling, pulling up and generally a lot more mobile - you can't take your eyes off them for a second if they are on the move. There can also be sleep disruption as they hit the separation peak at that point.

I'd definitely go now Grin

i agree with the above posts. A 10 month old usually has at established sleep routine and you’ll probably need to fit your plans around their naps. As mentioned, a 4 month old just naps anywhere anytime

To add. It will be a lot easier to find somewhere warm in September/early October than in March. For warmth in March you really need long haul which is expensive and not ideal with a baby.

MissAmbrosia · 06/09/2022 13:45

Do you have a passport already?

CP7766 · 06/09/2022 16:33

@minipie great point thank you - definitely going to go sooner.

@MissAmbrosia yes it came last week, we were really lucky it didn’t take long. Didn’t want to book until we physically had it though!

We took our youngest to Florida (yes the theme parks and water parks) when she was 4-5 months old.

She was a dream and coped best out of the adults and 4 year old. Even with the time difference, 35 degree heat and the connecting flights which took 22 hours hotel room to hotel room 😆

Breastfed or bottle fed?

If breastfed then definitely at 4 months - you don’t need to worry about sourcing food or water for them. If bottle fed then I think still 4 months but it is less of a difference as I know a few families who had problems sorting bottles whilst travelling.

4 months hands down. No need to think about solids, they can still barely move, and they nap loads. I wish I'd travelled more when mine was still under 7 months or so, but it was at a time where travel was only just opening up after Covid and there were all those ever-changing rules and extortionate Covid tests so it wasn't worth the hassle.

@Mumoftwoinprimary oh good point - ebf so that helps too!
