Best Carribean island?

DP and I are looking at booking our honeymoon shortly, we think we have narrowed it down to the Caribbean but are not sure which island. We’ve heard Barbados is the nicest but it seems the most expensive too! We like luxury but also activities, DP won’t tolerate 2 weeks on the beach 😀What are some recommendations for islands but also hotels? Budget is around £6k - £7k total for a couple of weeks ideally.

I've been to a few Caribbean islands and my favourite by a mile was Tobago.

Small so you can travel everywhere, unspoiled by tourism, stunning beautiful beaches and wildlife (never seen so many birds!), very laid back and a lot more authentic than some islands where the tourists tend to stay in their 5* AI resorts most of the time!

Can I ask where abouts you stayed? We went about 10 years ago and what the island was beautiful and the beaches we went to lovely, it was difficult to find anywhere luxurious to stay. And the food in our hotel was pretty rubbish. We did go out to a couple of lovely restaurants but we ended up visiting them both twice in a week because there didn’t seem to be a lot of choice.

I've recently come back from Dominica - it's beautiful, picturesque and lush. Not much to do but really peaceful.
Love Jamaica. Great vibe.
St Kitts is lovely too.

Yes to Dominica (not Dom Rep), Barbados, Antigua, St Vincent and St Kitts. To be honest, all the islands appeal to me.

Turks and Caicos was far more beautiful than Antigua and, well, just stunning.

Agree with pp. We loved going out and about in Barbados. The residents were really friendly and we always felt really safe when we were there.

St Lucia was also a really beautiful place to visit, but our resort actually recommended (with hindsight they were way too politely advising) having a guide (the taxi driver) accompany us on any excursions. We declined on the first outing, and it was quite scary and uncomfortable.

@NewYorkLassie last time we stayed at in a lodge at Castara Retreats. It was absolutely lovely, all surrounded by nature and beautiful beaches.

There weren't any swanky 5* hotels I could see on Tobago!

Coco's resort in Antigua is small, adults only and just gorgeous - the staff are really welcoming and up for a late night party!

@Highlandbrow We did the jungle zipline and also did a tour of the volcano and chocolate plantation.

All safe if you take a tour with a driver.

British Virgin Islands

As someone else said Nevis is beautiful it’s where princess diana used to stay and you can get a boat across from st kitts.

Ive done a split trip before 1 week in Barbados followed by a week in St Lucia and very luckily got upgraded to jade mountain. The 2weeks had a totally different feel, just don’t do the volcano trip in St Lucia smelly and not worth it.

underneaththeash · 06/09/2022 21:20

I love the Caribbean, but 2 weeks is too long in any island.
i’c go 1 week St Lucia. - week 2 Antigua.

To answer your question Barbados is the best island Smile How about a two centre? We did Barbados and Antigua for honeymoon.

Barbados - safe, easy to get around, lots to do - boat trips, caves, rum factory, gardens, museums, snorkelling, cricket, horse riding and racing, shopping, golf, beach clubs and the most stunning restaurants - literally the best restaurants in the world. Yes it can be pricey but if you get the right deal absolutely worth it. BA has had some great deals since covid. Most west coast hotels very good, south coast generally cheaper but still good. Some of the bigger hotels have all been taken over by Marriott but still good eg Tamarind. Independent hotels like Mango Bay, The Crane amazing. Cheaper ones like Southern Palms and Rostrevor.

Jamaica - is great and a fantastic vibe. Again lots to do eg Dunns river falls, blue mountains, Martha brae but you can only really go on guided tours not out and about on your own. Ocho Rios is best base to see the aforementioned things. Otherwise you want Negril for the sunset. Obviously there are places like Sandals and Couples resorts but they also have cheaper brands like Riu.

Antigua - probably the most beautiful and unspoilt but a bit boring, much less to do.

St Lucia - a reasonable amount to do but the island is harder to get around as essentially it's built on a volcano so depending on where you stay can be a long drive. Obviously you can go via boat around the island though. Areas like Rodney Bay have a lot going on.

Hope that helps!

we had our honeymoon in the body holiday St Lucia.. fabulous hotel, you get a spa treatments every day included.. loads of activities, any excursions out of the resort we did with a guide. I’d go again in a heart beat

Tobago has more of an eco-tourism vibe and high rise hotels are not allowed and you could also take the ferry to Trinidad where the food is unique because of it's mixed cultural heritage.
Barbados is safe and lovely and need not be too expensive if you stay on the south coast. Even the local food sold in Big B supermarket is tasty. You can do sailing day trips.

Grand Cayman is my favourite Caribbean island. How about a Caribbean cruise?
