Taking DCs Friends on Hols - Insurance

Taking DS‘s friend (11) on hols for a week abroad next year. I understand I need a letter confirming parental consent for travel and medical emergencies, but, how do I organise travel insurance ? Would it be under the friends parent‘s policy or can I add him to our travel insurance policy ? He obvs doesn’t live with us.

DD went overseas twice with a friend and her family when she was under 18 and we were able to get her her own insurance policy. You would usually have to be travelling with your parents to be covered by a family policy and you might be able to add her to your policy but as she is not family I would imagine it would cost. I would say to the parents to make sure they get insurance for her and give you a copy of the policy for travel.

Sorry, ignore the her stuff, just realised it’s a boy.

The only challenge if she is on different insurance may be that if something happened to one person others may not be covered as it's a different policy.

Eg if they had a medical emergency and could not make planned flight home you would need to ensure that if you were on a different policy it would cover you to remain behind with them (

I would say better to all be on one policy if possible.

I'd ask that they were set up with their own policy by their parents. Our friend took school friend away who then broke their leg and had to cover all costs on the spot. It won't be pricey but it wouldn't be a maybe but a definite requirement for me taking someone else's child abroad.

Also completing the personal details will need parental input to ensure it is all correct. If you make a mistake and cover isn't given, worst case scenario, would be a very sticky situation. It's common sense that the parents provide this and give you the information regarding their child's insurance policy prior to the holiday. Remember that some water sports won't be covered unless declared prior to the holiday.

We took one of dd's friends abroad with us twice. Each time, her parents sorted out her travel insurance.

@Flatandhappy & @cariadlet - sounds like you may know each other 😊 Thanks everyone, I’ll advise the parents they need to get a separate insurance for their DS.
