Will need some Sun by February!

Can't afford the Caribbean so looking for a cheaper alternative.

I have been to Tenerife and Lanzarote so I thought that Cape Verde could be a possibility.

I thought I found a nice 5 star resort but the reviews weren't great.

Any tips or recommendations please?

I’d join some of the Tui Facebook groups and read some of the comments there re Cape before booking. Do a search. We were going to book and the experiences of others completely put us off - not being able to go in the sea due to storms / bad weather, hardly anything to do off resort (if you’re used to Tenerife etc I think you’ll be in for a shock..!), poor standards of hygiene and safety etc etc.

Don’t mean to be all doom and gloom and I’m sure lots of people love it but the things I’d read completely put me off.

There is virtually nothing to do in Cabo Verde, Sal, other than sit by the pool/beach.
you can do a day long tour with covers the salt pools, swimming with lemon sharks and something else I can’t remember.

the flights are also painful, for us it was 5.5hrs on a short haul flight plane, so no in seat entertainment, smaller seats, no meals etc etc. it’s a long time on a crap plane.

I know it also sounds a bit overkill but also google earth / google maps satellite the hotels you’re looking at and see what else is around. When we did this we found the hotel was literally the ONLY thing there, nothing else at all for miles and miles and miles.

I was going to say don’t go. I know a few different people who have been and all said they were bored and weather not as good as they expected.

Hmm, I'm glad I've not booked anything!

Where would be a good alternative?

We don't want to do a lot, We would be happy swimming/snorkelling few local towns etc.

I’m bucking the trend as I love Cape Verde (Sal) Santa Maria beach is lovely and the bikini beach club has a Miami vibe. The locals are lovely. There isn’t much to do which is why I like it and the weather has always been fab when I’ve been. It’s the only place I’ve been where the sun is right above you and you tan both sides when sitting. There’s a few things to do such as wading in the sea with lemon sharks, bobbing about in a lake that has high salt content that you just float plus the usual boat trips and swim in the sea and horse riding at sunset on the beach. I guess it depends what you want from a holiday, the landscape is barren as it’s so hot nothing grows but the hotel areas are lush as well watered. I’d pick Cape Verde over the canaries anytime

If you want a relaxing holiday by the pool, cape verde is the place to go. There is nothing much else to do being a third world country.

We went on our honeymoon in April to Boa Vista and the weather was extremely warm but windy constantly. The beach outside the hotel could not be swum in as the waves were treacherous but we managed to swim in the sea in another part of the island.

We did a few tours with a local company to get outside of the hotel where we tried local drinks/ foods etc and seen different parts of the island. They did whale watching tours/ island tours/ african nights/ boat trips. Go with a local tour operator though and not through your holiday provider

Their catch phrase is no stress and I can 1000% say we were extremely relaxed.

Melia Tortuga In Sal. Lovely hotel with 2 bedroom family suites and not like the huge soulless hotels there. Supposed to be 5* but more 4 really.
We had a great time with the teens, not much to do but we went snorkelling, paddled with sharks, hired dune buggy’s , swam in salt lakes, jumped off rocks into the sea.
We went in September and it was very hot but not sure about Feb.
Definitely recommend

We loved Cape Verde. We stayed at Melia Llana. It's not like the Canary Islands, other than the climate and volcanic landscape. It's very much a developing country with a developing tourist industry.
