Is anyone else nervous to book for next year due to energy price increases?

Fully appreciate we're in a fortunate position that we can usually afford a holiday, but if gas/electric prices increase to c£6.6k then this will seriously be our holiday budget gone. Part of me feels like it can't really go up that much but I don't want to put down a holiday deposit if we can't afford the balance! So torn what to do... I guess we'll have to wait and decide in the new year so as a family of 5 we are generally a bit more limited on room options 😬. (I hope this post doesn't offend anyone as I do fully appreciate we're fortunate to be able to afford holidays usually)

Hi OP perfectly reasonable question and I don't think an apology is necessary otherwise we may as well bin all holiday boards Confused

But yes I'm feeling a bit the same.

I think a huge amount of people will be sacrificing a holiday next year. I paid a deposit for a small cruise for myself back in february and the balance has to be paid next month but i've already decided to forego the deposit. I'm too frightened to fritter away £1500 at the moment so i'll just take the small loss.

I booked yesterday because I can only see the prices of holidays increasing hugely from here on in.

Thats quite interesting - I was thinking the opposite - that no-one would be booking holidays and that there would be loads of last minute cheap deals.

My Dd and family have booked with us for next year. We help th by paying part of the costs but I still afraid we/they have bitten off more than we can chew looking at what's happening with fuel bills ext
But so much has been missed over the covid years and her teens are growing up fast so we have gone for it. We took the view that the sooner we booked the sooner we would take the need to cut back and save seriously. The kids are looking forward to it and know we will be cutting down on the usual extravagant Christmas this year.if we had left booking up until after Christmas none of us would have economised yet and the chances of getting away would be a lot slimmer. We help but can't afford to meet all their costs so just hoping we've done the right thing 🤔

For God’s sake, don’t feel you have to issue a trigger warning before you are allowed to talk about booking a bloody holiday !

User148563 · 30/08/2022 15:47

Awful how people feel guilty for posting about anything nice now or getting anything new.

Do you get offers like free child spaces for booking early. That might be a consideration for booking early

Sunshineismyfriend · 30/08/2022 15:53

We are hoping to book in September assuming prices won’t be too high whereas next summer they will probably be sky high. We just won’t afford it otherwise.

CakeCrumbs44 · 30/08/2022 16:05

Book something which has a low deposit or a flexible cancellation policy. Some airbnbs have clauses where you can cancel up to a week ahead. We've booked a lodge on a holiday site for next June and only had to pay 10% deposit (about £50) We can decide when the balance is due, whether we want to go ahead.

I'm due to fly to my sister's wedding next year (postponed from 2020). I was so looking forward to it , but now it seems I will be unable to afford it, as will most of the rest of the family. I feel so sad for my sister as it's highly doubtful anybody from the UK will be able to attend.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 30/08/2022 16:11

We’ve just booked a a Christmas holiday. Thinking we’ll save half the cost of the holiday by not heating the house!

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 30/08/2022 16:16

Can you pay off the holiday a bit at a time rather than settling the full balance at the end? That way the holiday will be paid for.

TBH I’m more concerned that a lot of travel companies are going to go out of business in the next year. Companies like TUI are already struggling, if there is a downturn on holiday bookings I honestly can’t see them staying around.

poster82 · 30/08/2022 16:30

We are booked for 2023 as energy is fixed until summer and mortgage for a few years so we can afford to go on holiday still with other things increasing. But if the energy bills really are as high as they say they will be next summer when we come off our fix then it is a 2024 holiday that may not happen!

This crisis hasn't bitten for everyone yet, it's barely started. Ask again next year and it will likely be a different story.

mrsnjw · 30/08/2022 16:41

We booked our holiday for next year on Monday. I think prices will rocket. We are going self catering in Greece. I can now put a certain amount away each month to pay for it. We do like to book early though.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 30/08/2022 16:48

We're not booking for next year for a number of reasons and the increasing energy costs and general financial uncertainty is one of them.

Also we suffered flight cancellations this year and lost our holiday as a result. Only got the money from the insurance co after a battle and still fighting the airline for compensation. Ended up paying well over the odds for a last minute ( inferior ) package holiday to replace the fight and lovely villa holiday we had lost.

It just all seems so risky and stressful at the moment so we will be camping somewhere in the UK next summer.

We are a family who often go abroad two or three times a year but this year has put us right off.

Afterfire · 30/08/2022 16:56

We booked for next June before the energy price thing happened and paid using our 0 % credit card like we normally do (normally pay it off every year by the time we go) and I’m now feeling a little bit sick and wondering how we are going to manage our increased energy bills and the payments. Appreciate it’s completely our fault and I feel bad worrying when other families are literally trying to feed themselves but this is the first time we’ve ever really struggled to pay it back…..! Gulp. Wouldn’t usually be an issue at all!

Whycanineverever · 30/08/2022 17:00

I was planning a big holiday for a big birthday which I had to park for covid rules. Want to book for next October and I don't have much leeway because of oldest gcse / a levels.

I think I'm going to book it and hope for the best!

It was only a small deposit when I booked before with BA.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 30/08/2022 17:08

I wanted to book for Italy next year and the plan was to book at the end of our summer holiday (in Britain) this year. We just haven’t - the concern over bills means we have to prioritise those before fun.

Didiplanthis · 30/08/2022 17:13

We are a family of 5 with quite specific requirements due to SEN issues so have to book early to secure what we need. we were able to book with a tiny deposit so won't be disastrous if we lose it. I'm worried prices will rocket as well.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 30/08/2022 17:14

We booked our holiday in the uk for next year at the beginning of August. Paid the deposit and are slowly paying it off monthly so by the time it gets to needing to pay the balance it should either be low or already paid

LoopyGremlin · 30/08/2022 17:14

We have already booked. First holiday since covid but slightly worried as it’s £6.5k! In saying that, the same holiday is now over £7k so maybe it was a good idea to have booked early.

mrsnjw · 30/08/2022 17:21

I'm currently debating booking centre parcs for oct half term next year. I see that it has increased by £400 for this year since I booked a year ago.

Wearefoooked22 · 30/08/2022 17:26

We had no choice but to book one as my sil is having a destination wedding!going to freeze all winter to pay for it!…I’m also worried about leaving our house empty as I expect crime to go through the roof.

EmzyEmz · 30/08/2022 17:39

You’re definitely not alone in feeling that way, I’ve been having this awful feeling in my stomach for a few days as my bestie is getting married in Greece next year and as much as I love her, i really want to cancel …. Because 2023 sounds like a financial nightmare. She has a fiancé and they both have good jobs, I’ve got a decent job too but it might be a reaction to growing up poor, I do feel like I need a financial safety net for myself and my daughter , im single and don’t have wealthy parents to bail me out etc

Dadaya · 30/08/2022 17:44

I’ve booked a holiday already. For years we’ve been saying “it’s fine we’ll just go later, when the kids are old enough to appreciate it, when we have more time and money”. Except now we’ve gone “oh fuck, there isn’t going to be any later!” We thought there would be future opportunities to go on holidays but now it’s looking like there won’t be. Life is no longer stable and reliable, there’s been a pandemic followed by a war and stupid increases in cost of living… we’re worried if we don’t go now we’ll never be able to. So we’ve booked before it becomes totally unaffordable for normal people to go on holidays.
