Storms in Venice

I thought tickets for a last minute holiday to Venice with my two dd’s aged 11 & 15, but have now seen that it is going to be stormy the whole time we’re there.
Would you still go? I was imagining swimming in the pool, being touristy on the day etc-not dodging lightening strikes!
I booked with Ryanair and there is no chance of a refund or transfer so i’d have to accept it as a stupid mistake if I cancelled.
Would you still go or cut your losses?

Absolutely still go! I would never cancel a non-refundable trip unless travel had actually become dangerous. There is always fun and adventure to be had, even if it looks different to what you had originally planned. And the weather might keep some of the day trippers at bay, so it might be slightly quieter.

I had a similar problem and spent a ridiculous sum on a properly waterproof coat. There was never a question of not going. Of course good weather would be great but Venice is enough itself whatever the weather. Go!

I’ve never thought of Venice being a pool type of resort, I always go in winter! I love the atmosphere when it’s stormy, it’s a beautiful place. There is so much to do, so many galleries/museums/restaurants etc. you’ll have an amazing time, in fact it’s one of the places I would go in a storm!!

Yeah when you said pool it really threw me. I’ve been to Venice this year and I imagine it could be stunning in stormy weather. Lots of pastry shops and coffee to drink. The Doges palace have a “secret” tour which goes to areas not available on the general tour ( Prisoners cells) etc and I’d look to book that in advance.

I'd still go, it'll be exciting!

We went to Lanzarote one October and had some amazing storms, we really enjoyed the novelty of warm, torrential rain!

You might need wellies though, I keep seeing FB videos of Venice with calf deep water but no context as to when or why.

I love Venice though have only been when it's warm.

We honeymoon there at the cipriani hotel and although it was October we swam and lay on the sun loungers daily.

However lots of restaurants are indoors and so I'm sure the atmosphere will be absolutely lovely.

Thank you! I shall and dig out the raincoats & do my best to make it an adventure! I needed to hear some positive views.

The storms don't tend to last all day. We were in Lake Garda last summer with a similar forecast. It would be nice all day then tip it down for an hour, then be nice again.

Definitely take waterproofs and wellies. The basilica in St Marks Square was surrounded in ankle deep water on a very wet day when we visited.

I've been to Venice in November when it POURED with cold rain, but we still had a great time. You might find that it pours down for an hour or two and then the sun comes out.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 27/08/2022 16:07

Some areas do flood so be aware.

Look at tourism places online and see what things are open inside for when the rain pours. It’s a a beautiful city despite that!

SisterAgatha · 27/08/2022 16:11

The best storm I’ve ever seen was in Venice.

we ran through all the little streets while it pelted it down with rain, the sky went purple, we just opened out on to the Rialto bridge when a massive bolt of lightning lit up the sky! It was magical!

YukoandHiro · 27/08/2022 16:12

There's so much to do! Don't cancel. It also might only be stormy for part of the day.

Hbh17 · 27/08/2022 16:18

It's Venice, for goodness sake - the weather doesn't matter! Go for the buildings, art, churches, cafes, mooching around the back streets & getting lost...... my last visit was December 2018 and it was great.
