We will be visiting Prague in October half term (DC aged 12 and 14).
Does anyone have any tips? I’ve already booked the Vytopna restaurant after reading past threads on this!

Thanks in advance

The Jewish quarter is fascinating (if sad). Visit the castle and walk down the steps. My teenager loved the John Lennon wall and the Communist museum. The funicular to Petrin hill. The Marina restaurant on a riverboat. We went for brunch at the Cafe Imperial. I liked the Mucha museum.

Watching with interest, visiting soon

For food, I’d recommend San Carlo Dittrichova, Pepenero Pizza and Pasta, Krcma (purely for the atmosphere) and Pivnice Stupartska (very good deals for lunch).

I would recommend watching a few videos on YouTube by Honest Guide - he has lots of great insider tips as well as videos about how to avoid getting scammed.

Scammed, like how ?

It's been a while since I've been there, but I always enjoyed the experience of The Two Cats. It's traditional Czech cuisine, and there are cover charges and charges for the music, so don't be surprised when there are a few crowns extra added to the bill. It's still good value IMHO, but it is a shock if you're not expecting it (which I think the restaurant should make more clear).

It's a very traditional place, but obviously being in a central location it now caters more for the tourist trade. Still quite fun though.

And if you can work out how to get there, Vyšehrad is worth a visit. Fantastic views over the city, and noticing in the cemetery there how much bigger Smetana's plot is than Dvořák's was a surprise!

The trams are easy to use as long as you get tickets beforehand from one of the kiosks, and don't forget to validate them.

I have done several walking tours and they've all been excellent. Various topics but the local guides are super

These all look and sound great - thank you!

Mostly money-changing scams. For instance, if you’re looking at the exchange rates outside an exchange kiosk someone will approach you with a hugely tempting rate, but the notes they’re giving you are expired Belarussian currency.
At ATM machines always get money in the local currency without conversion (to euros/pounds/dolllars).
Honest Guide has a map on his site of exchange places that don’t charge commission. But cards are pretty universal now - we’re just coming back from a flying visit of 24 hours and didn’t use cash once.
Keep away from the people offering photos with birds of prey - not only are the birds mistreated, but they will try to extort a huge ‚fee‘ for the photo.
Don‘t use the cooked ham kiosks on Old Town Square - the price quoted is for 100 grams but they give you a huge plate that’s too big to eat, and you pay by weight.
There are plenty more scams sadly, some illegal, others merely unethical.

Sorry, that last post was an answer to AnyFucker‘s question about typical scams.

Hey, we walked past there earlier today, it did look quite good from the outside (if we’re talking about Dvou Kocek).

BeigeAgainstTheMachine · 28/08/2022 22:41

That's the place. It's not the greatest cuisine, nor, indeed, anything else. But it's nice, fairly authentic (as much as anywhere in central Prague can be), and I just enjoyed the experience. As I say, just be aware there are charges for the music etc. (not very much, but can annoy you if you're not expecting them), so if you go in there knowing that, it's much better.

A meal on the jazz boat.
