Solo trip to Dublin

I made arrangements with a friend to meet in Dublin. (She lives there) and she kindly said I could stay with her. Always been lovely to catch up with her over the years and I lived there briefly in the late 90s.

As soon as I booked the flights she did a u turn on me and made lots of feeble excuses and said she would now be working on those days etc. I suspect (controlling spouse issues), but anyway when I got back to her to suggest meeting in the evening, there is now radio silence.

I therefore wondered if people have suggestions for things to do on my own for a couple of days? I visited 6 months ago and have done a lot of the usual, Guinness storehouse, walks in Dalkey, Howth, Powerscourt, Epic museum, National Gallery. Both parents went back during their retirement (no longer with us), so I know it fairly well. I won't be driving, so will be reliant on public transport, happy to walk places also. Would also be good to have suggestions for something in the evening as I'd rather go out somewhere than sit in hotel but not comfortable in pubs etc on my own.

Hoping for some inspiration!😀

For the evening would you enjoy the theatre?

The Abbey and the Gate are the most well known both easily walkable in the city centre?
Or Riverdance is currently on in the Gaiety?

Maybe you would enjoy Kilmainham Jail and IMMA is nearby too. Both easy to get to on the Luas.

If the weather is nice maybe a swim at sea point or 40 foot? Both on the DART.

A posh and leisurely breakfast at Bewley's? (Yes it's a tourist trap but a lovely one if you like architecture).I can't tell from your list if you've done the Jeanne Johnstone ship, that's good. A 1916 revolution walking tour? I recently watched Alan Cumming's "urban secrets" trip to Dublin and it was interesting ... made me realise I'd missed a few good things despite having visited 8 times over 30 years.

Do you like comedy? There's usually something on in places like Vicar Street.

Thanks for your replies - some good ideas there. Theatre would be great - I should see what's on. Not sure what IMMA is - comedy will check that out. And the ship - not heard of it. Thank you!

IMMA is Museum of Modern Art. It's located is an old hospital for soldiers. Lovely garden too.

Kilmainham Gaol is a must (IMMA is close by too). 14 Henrietta St, National Museum (Bog Bodies), Christchurch Cathedral and Dublinia, Dublin Castle, MoLI. Plenty of walking tours.
Evening theatre: Gaiety/Bord Gais/Olympia. Vicar St for comedy and music. IFI cinema.

If you like history what about a day trip to Glendalough in Wicklow? I just checked and there is still a bus service from Stephens Green ( but just one bus a day each way).

Wildehorses · 26/08/2022 09:53

Definitely do not miss Henrietta Street (tenement museum) and Kilmainham Gaol is fab. Dublin Literary Pub Crawl is a great way to spend the evening - I have heard the people who do it are generally good craic! MOLI (Museum of Literature) is a lovely place to have lunch and mooch around - gardens behind it. Get a coffee in Bewleys, Grafton Street. A day trip (half a day really) to Newgrange in Co Meath might be good - google day trips from Dublin and I am sure lots will come up - have a great time!

Craicnet has a few Dublin threads I think

I'd start at the winding stair bookshop. Have a coffee and a read of their notice boards.

You will be spoiled for choice at all the things happening. We found people very friendly, especially so when we met them again at the next event I had seen advertised there.

Stay flexible. Take photos of all the different ads, so if something overruns (and you are having a great time anyway ) you still know what's next.

Enjoy. Beautiful place. Lovely people.

You could do a walking food tour or do the afternoon tea on the bus tour.
