‘Adventure’ holidays with toddlers

DP and I loved to have an adventure while on holiday, pre-DC. Previous examples include backpacking in India with no plan as to where to go next, ditto SE Asia, trekking holidays, multi-stop holidays. We’re happy to have a couple of beach days a week, but basically not beach/ pool resort based holidays. We also love cities.
This isn’t really possible now we have DC (2.5 and one on the way), but we really don’t want a weeks AI in a resort either. This year (first foreign trip with DC) we had 4 days at a Spanish coast location and then got the train to a Spanish city for another 3 days and we were happy with this sort of compromise for now. We’re also going to Cornwall later this year where we can base ourselves and have days out.

We’re looking for ideas similar to the Spanish trip for next year. Neither of us would be confident driving on the right, especially with the DC and we’d ideally like somewhere where either English is understood, or we wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb for not speaking the local language (we like cities for this reason).

We’ll have roughly a 3.5yr old and 6 month old at this point, so somewhere child friendly, fairly short flight (4hrs ish max) and not too hot ideally, but warm would be great (c.25c max) We don’t Mind changing location once during a weeks holiday, or happy to stay in one base as long as there are fairly close things to do each day.
close to a beach for one or two half days on the beach would be a bonus for DC1.

Does anyone have any ideas for locations that would fit all this criteria?

thank you.

By the way I-escape with Kids website has some great kid friendly accommodation suggestions, which are definitely not in the large AI hotel mould.

Overcoming the aversion to driving in Europe opens up way more possibilities - honestly if you class yourself as an adventurous traveller, driving on the right is not a big deal. We do travel by train a lot with kids but schlepping your luggage around can be hard work.

With kids I find making where we stay part of the adventure helps, as you’re not tied to being out exploring constantly. We’ve had a lot of success with Airbnb - from yurts to treehouses to borrowing other people’s houses (complete with all their kids toys etc) and living like a local for a few days.

Slowing down the pace a bit and seeing things through the kids eyes (accepting that the things that will wow them aren’t the same as what will wow you) - you don’t need to tick-off big sights.

I also agree with a pp that UK based holidays can be awesome - partly pandemic enforced but we’ve had the best of times rockpooling and building campfires and climbing trees.

coastal turkey might be quite good for you if you did September /October. Lots of opportunities for boat trips, mixing beach and ruins etc. we’ve been a few times and the children have always had a lot of attention.

I would echo though that 2 children are harder in some ways than one and their needs change. We’ve been away recently doing a non-resort holiday and by day 2 I was googling AI resorts with a kids club for next year. Trips to the local supermarket were apparently the worst thing ever according to my 6yo and she got bored with just us for company. The 3yo was easier than the older one and was just happy doing whatever.
