Child sick, due to fly Monday, who will insurance cover.

We have holiday booked for 2 adults and 3 kids. Due to fly early Monday morning. Youngest child (4) is sick and needs to be seen on hospital on Monday so she can’t go. Have doctors letter saying she’s unfit to fly. My travel insurance phone line is only open 9-5 Monday to Friday. Can’t get in touch with them today and flight will have left on Monday before they open.
Will the insurance cover all of us for not going or only the child unable to go.? Wording of policy is unclear ..
If it only covers sick child DH may as well go with the other 2 but if we are all covered would rather claim on insurance for us all and go together at a later date. No idea what to do!

What does the policy wording say? I would have thought it would cover the child and an adult to stay, but not the whole family. I’m not an expert though.

HouseInChaos · 20/08/2022 17:47

Who is the policy with? It would be unusual for them not to have a 24 hour emergency line.

UrsulaPandress · 20/08/2022 17:49

Surely there must be cover over the weekend.

But I’ve been shafted many times by insurance companies so nothing surprises me.

GrandSlamFinalee · 20/08/2022 18:06

There surely have a 24/7 line that you would call from abroad if having an accident at the weekend for example?

If they don’t, just call on Monday… and never book with this company again!

LittleBearPad · 20/08/2022 18:08

There must be number - what would happen if you were in hospital and needed to speak to them.

Who is it?

GlueyMooey · 20/08/2022 18:18

Tell us the name of the insurance company. I bet someone can find the contact details

HipsterCoffeeShop · 20/08/2022 18:19

They must have a 24 hour staffed line. How else would you get help after a car accident at 3am for example?

DPotter · 20/08/2022 18:22

They must have a 24 hr line for overseas. If you can't find one in your paperwork - try googling them

DPotter · 20/08/2022 18:22

Sorry you child is ill Flowers

TheFairyCaravan · 20/08/2022 18:26

When we had to cancel our holiday, many years ago, because DS1 was sick and hospitalised on the morning of travel the insurance company paid out for all of us. That’s me, DH and both children. We just sent the doctor’s letter in saying he was unfit to fly and they paid out really quickly.

Im sorry she’s poorly and you’re missing your holiday. 💐

Hi thanks for your replies. It’s Tesco insurance. I phoned the emergency line but it only deals with situations when you are abroad. I told him my situation that phone lines won’t be open before we are due to fly but he had no interest. He said possibly only sick child covered but didn’t know.

My UK travel insurance pays out if none of you go because one is ill.

You really need to read the policy and all the paperwork that came with it, and try and get hold of them on their emergency number assuming that they have one

apussinbooties · 20/08/2022 18:35

This is the wording I’m hoping we are all covered as we are close relatives of the sick child. Am sure they have a way out of it just wondering what’s the norm in these circumstances.

Child sick, due to fly Monday, who will insurance cover.

It looks like you are all covered. What the value of the holiday? Is the illness that your son have something brand new or is it something that's happened before?

If you have the basic cover it looks like you get up to £1000 per person with a £99 excess (but it says a maximum of two excesses will be applied. I hope that means 2x £99 for the whole group

Have you tried Twitter?

I’m an insurance lawyer. I’ve read the full policy booklet online. You’re all covered as your child is an Insured person and you are all his/her travelling companions.

The only caveat to this is if your child’s illness was a pre-existing condition.

The person you spoke to on the phone was a muppet- this is basic stuff.

They will take 2x the excess off the amount paid out. The payout will be capped at £1000, £5,000 or £10,000 per person depending on what level of cover you bought.

You’ll have to show that you were unable to get a refund on any of the costs incurred.

So sorry your child is ill and hope they get better soon. Post again if you are told anything different by Tesco.

Thank you for your help with this.
The illness wasn’t pre-existing so hopefully so hassle with payout. 🤞
Would be good to have the money back to book something else when DD better. She should be out of hospital Tuesday if all well by then x

If it helps OP, I had to claim a few years ago after being advised not to travel. It took one long form to fill in, had to pay £35 for GP to sign it. Then had a brief phone call with an assessor going through it and the money was paid into our account less than a week later. It wasn't as arduous as I'd imagined it would be and they covered everything apart from the £35 fee for the GP.
