Hi i am a mum of two, i have a 5 year old and a 3 year old. after a long time we went to visit my brother and his children and just a few hours after we have left my nephew had rashes over his body, he had chicken pox. he has no fever or other symptoms from a few days before so they never knew what was coming. a few hours after we left his face and body was covered in spots. i know that chicken pox is contagious, and i am going aboard for our first family holiday in 6 days. i am now worried if they will get it and what i will have to do, i dont know if i should cancel my holiday? please help🙏

I think it takes around 2 weeks usually for the spots to appear. You would probably be ok getting on holiday, but it could cause real issues it they develop spots when you are there! You couldn't fly home or use public transport. How long are you away for? Do you have good travel insurance?

Hi, thank you, we will be there for 11 days so from today onwards it will be 17 days till there and back. i dont know if there is a possibility that they will not get it but we were in the same house and the spots appeard a few hours after we have left.

I think cancelling a holiday because they might get chicken pox would be tricky unless you were prepared to loose the money you have paid. I can't see any insurance paying out for a possible event rather than an actual event.

Chicken pox is very contagious but there's no guarantee they'll catch it. DD played with a child who came down with chicken pox the next day but didn't catch it. We got the call to say her friend had dots just as we were getting in the car going on holiday.

You could look to get the chicken pox vaccine. Even after exposure it can help avoid it.

Hi Lindy, also thank you for the reply. i do have max insurance cover but as you said a insurance wont pay for a possible event. i know it will be expensive to cancel the holiday and the kids were so excited for their first holiday and thats not what i actualt want to do.

my son did have contact with his bestfriend in class who had chicken pox and he didnt end up getting it before but i dont know if it will be the same now.

they do say that after contact it appears 2 weeks after is this true? im so sorry i just dont have no knowledge about chicken pox and am so anxious now before my travel.

I'd still go ahead with your holiday, but stock up on Poxclin mousse and Calpol to take with you in case you need it.
