With a 1 year old and a pregnant me! We've been rather spoilt holiday wise in the past and don't really want to go on a brits abroad...

Sicily or anywhere in Southern Italy really.

WendyWeber · 20/01/2008 23:50

Costa del Sol is pretty warm early April, generally - cool evenings/nights for sleeping - nice short flight too, and everything's so cheap!

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 21/01/2008 12:54

I was wondering about costa del sol - is it T-shirt weather at the beginning of April? Is there much to do there other than play golf?? I was worried that might be a bit brits abroad?

We went mid April (12-26 approx) a few years ago - we had one very wet day and night, otherwise it was gorgeous for 2 solid weeks, but not too hot to be able to go outside any time. We rented 2 villas, one at Alhaurin del Torre near Torremolinos and then one in Marbella; both had unheated pools and the kids were in and out every day. You could walk on the beach barefoot because the sand wasn't too hot, but it was still mild enough to eat outside every evening without a jumper.

In terms of things to do with a 1-yr-old I can't help I'm afraid - our youngest was 10. There is a fab zoo at Fuengirola and lots of lovely places to visit.

chopchopbusybusy · 21/01/2008 13:15

Costa Del Sol can be chilly in April. We went last year in April. Spent a fortune in wood for the fire to keep us from freezing in villa. Pool was beautiful, but purely ornamental. DD2 spent much of the holiday with her nose pressed up against the window gazing wistfully through the rain to the pool. It was warm enough on some days to wander around with a t shirt on, as long as you had a jumper handy when the sun went behind a cloud.

On a positive note, there are many nice places to visit - some pretty dire places too!

I'd say Canaries, Israel, Egypt would be the nearest places with a decent chance of good weather - but none of them would be my idea of a good holiday. Sorry, all a bit negative I know, but April is just a bit too early in the season for good weather.

WendyWeber · 21/01/2008 13:17

Ah, but last year we had their weather here in April and they had ours!

The normal April daytime temp is in the 20s.

chopchopbusybusy · 21/01/2008 13:22

Yes, agreed wendy, we kept seeing the worldwide weather forecast which didn't make us feel any better ...

In fairness, there were a few days when the temperature was in the mid 20s but that still felt very cold. We returned a few months later and baked... we moaned about that too lol.

WendyWeber · 21/01/2008 13:37

Oh I know what you mean, chopchop! We were there for 2 weeks late May/early June last year and that was just about OK for me - not usually above about 28. A couple of days went over 30 though and then I wilted (everybody else loved it of course, they all wallowed by the pool in and out of the water while I sat indoors with a book!) The time we went in April the weather was really lovely - if we ever went in July/August I would have to spend the whole day indoors.

Another year we had a late Oct/early Nov hol further to the east (Costa Tropical) and the weather was pretty good then too, plus we caught the first snow in the Sierra Nevada and went up for snowball fights! The skiing season runs into April as a rule - you'd have to check what road conditions would be like, but on a clear warm day it would be a great day out driving up there (fantastic views); there is a ski resort just down from the summit plus a few little cafes right on the top.

geordiemacminx · 21/01/2008 13:41

There are some nice places in the Canaries if you stay away from the touristy resorts?

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 22/01/2008 09:43

Thank you for your replies - it would be great if the costa del sol was a good option as we can rent an apartment cheaply from a business colleague. Where are the nice places to visit and could we amuse ourselves for 10 days if the weather isn't great? The plus side is the short flight etc. It would be fab if it was warm enough to eat out on the terrace every evening - do you think that's a real possibility?

Put a shout out for lucy5 - she lives on costa del sol and has small children so she can give you more specific advice than I can!

Meanwhile, andalucia.com is the best website I know for the area - this page has details of all the smaller towns & villages, mostly inland, to visit - we've had trips to Ronda (which is fab), Mijas (not so keen), Frigiliana, and also the foothills of the Sierra Nevada called the Alpujarras, which is where the book Driving Over Lemons is set; also the El Torcal National Park.

The coastal towns west of Malaga are mostly pure seaside resort but Malaga itself (birthplace of Picasso!) and Marbella are both worth a proper visit, and Puerto Banus just west of Marbella is one of our kids' favourites to visit as it is stuffed with expensive cars and yachts.

The coastal towns east of Malaga are older and more interesting than the ones in the west - Salobrena is nice and so is Nerja.

If your DS is good in the car you could also think about visiting the historic cities, like Granada, Sevilla and Cordoba. Gibraltar is fascinating too (but in a different way!)

There is lots of art and culture too but with teenagers that didn't get a look-in on our trips

I can recommend malagacar.com for car hire - they meet you in the arrivals hall and bus you to their compound about 5 mins away, instead of having to trudge to the car hire hall, wait in a long queue, and then go off and find your own car in a murky multi-storey car park; and the reverse to return it so again, you don't have to make your way into the airport car park, find the right office to drop off the keys and then trudge a long way back to departures. They were really helpful, let us change car halfway through, and they are so cheap too!!!

Oh Wendy - you are marvellous - thank you! I'll shout for Lucy5 after a sandwich and also have a proper rustle through your links. Thank you so much. I really appreciate this.

whatever anyone says the costa del sol is going to be brits abroad. You could try the Valencia coast, it's more Germans abroad i hear

Anna8888 · 22/01/2008 13:58

We are going here at the end of April.

Anna8888 · 22/01/2008 14:00

This is also a lovely hotel in the Aeolian Islands

lucy5 · 22/01/2008 14:01

Hola! Well, let's start with the weather. April is a funny month, it can be gloriously warm in the day and quite chilly in the evening. I personally wouldn't eat out on the terrace in the evening but after coming from English weather, you might be able to.

Where is your apartment?

A few places of interest with kids

Fuengirola - Zoo, Tivoli world [theme park but small, with lots of rides for little kids. Selwo dolphinarium.

Benalmadena - Sea life centre [nice but only for half a day}

Estepona - Selwo safari [great day out]

Lots of lovely little towns if the weather is nice.

I am just about to feed ds will come back later and give you a proper list.

lucy5 · 22/01/2008 14:05

P.s there are still nice areas of the costa del sol that aren't infested with the pie and chip brigade, you just have to look a bit harder

TigerFeet · 22/01/2008 14:09

We are off to the Costa Calida in Spain (Murcia) in late April - apparently the temp ranges from lowish teens at night to highish 20s in the day - perfect

I have never been before but dh goes there with work on a regular basis and it is pretty and accessible to tourists but not on the tourist trail and therefore cheaper too!

Modern apartment with access to a pool and near a beach was £160 for the week and the flights for three of us came to about £300. We have hired a car for about £100.

Can't wait

lucy5 · 22/01/2008 14:13

Sorry just read the age of your dc and realised that most of those suggestions won't be suitable. Will pop back later.

ConfusedMover · 22/01/2008 14:27

Sicily or south of Croatia (Dubrovnik)

bossykate · 22/01/2008 14:29

i've been to sicily in april and it was nippy!

gsc · 22/01/2008 17:03

thinking of going to Oceania Club (www.oceaniaclub.co.uk) in greece in mid/late april. It's meant to be 20 degrees, but probably cool at night.
Have seen some good reviews on it but would be good to get some feedback if anyone has been?

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 23/01/2008 09:06

Hi everyone and thanks Lucy5 for helping!!!! I would really appreciate any names of anywhere good to go with a 15 month old and in particular if there are any good restaurants / bars where she can rummage around on the floor when she's bored of sitting in a highchair while we eat lunch etc!!!

OP posts:
PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 23/01/2008 09:07

sorry - we'd be between Estepona and San Pedro!
