Passport validity

Please reassure me that I’m right.

dc’s passport was issued on 8 Feb 2018 and expires on 8 oct 2023

We want to go to Turkey for a week, leaving the UK on 28th October 2022. Everywhere I’ve looked says it needs to be valid for at least 6 months from the date we arrive, which it is so we’re ok to book aren’t we?

Next issue is to go to Italy in February 2023. From my understanding for EU countries, it needs to be valid for 3 months on the date that we leave, which it will be.

Am I right i thinking that the current passport will be fine for both trips?

From my reading on the subject it should be ok.

If it was an adult one it wouldn't be valid as they are only valid for ten years if six months are added on the remaining six are not valid. So ten years from date of issue

If its the same with children the passport expires 8 Feb 23 so not valid for either.

It depends. Passports are now only valid for 10 years from the issue date. They used to add on the unused months but since Brexit they don't. So the passport expires in February 2023 and can't be used for an October holiday in Turkey. I would get a new passport application in now.

Just looked into it. You are fine, passports must not be more than 10 years old and have three or six months remaining depending on where you are going.

RampantIvy · 12/08/2022 15:57

I was talking about adult passports BTW. I'm not sure if the same rules apply to children's passports. You need to check this.

Kids passports are only valid for 5 years (plus anything added on, up to 9 months previously). This means kids passports are always under 10 years old so are fine to use even with the extension. You do still need to have the required validity after travel, 6m after entry to Turkey, 3m after travel for EU so it's fine.

Yes this would be true if it was an adult passport but as it is a child's it is valid for under ten years anyway.

Interestingly Ryanair did stop some children from boarding but they were proven to be incorrect

That’s exactly what I was asking! I have checked but was asking for reassurance that I’ve interpreted it correctly before I book anything.

That’s how I’d interpreted it. Think we’ll book!
