Can we claim compensation?

Four days before we were due to go on holiday, our return flight was cancelled by Easyjet. We booked through Thomas Cook as a package deal.

Thomas Cook offered to move our Easyjet flights to depart from Manchester rather than Newcastle but wouldn't cover additional expenses like rebooking airport parking, hotel night before, petrol.

The second option was to cancel Easyjet flights and rebook with Ryan Air but for an additional cost of £300ish as flights gone up, baggage charges.

The third option was to extend our stay by two days which cost £400ish extra for accommodation but at least we got something for the extra money. We went with this option. We also had to extend our parking and travel insurance for two days.

Well done if you've followed so far!

Can anyone offer any guidance as to whether we can claim any of the money back? Reading Easyjet and holiday insurance T&Cs we're confused as Easyjet did move our flights despite the situation being less than ideal. Not sure whether to pursue with Thomas Cook (who seem like a glorified middle man), Easyjet or travel insurance. Any wisdom here?!

I think if your flight is cancelled within two weeks of you being due to fly you are entitled to a set amount of compensation from the airline, there are some details about what you’re entitled to here: www.easyjet.com/en/terms-and-conditions/notice-of-rights-for-flight-delays-and-cancellations

You may be able to claim on your insurance if you have travel disruption cover as part of your policy.

Try to claim compensation due to EU261 (or UK261 if not travelling to an EU country). You’ll be entitled to either €250, 400 or 600 per person.

If this doesn’t work with either easyJet or Thomas cook, claim on your insurance for extra expenses.
