October half term holiday- £5k?! Am I too tight?

We are looking at booking an October half term holiday- 2 adults, 3 DC being aged 4, 2 and 4 months.

We are looking at all inclusive, pool hotel type holiday, 4star or so. Ideally somewhere with a kids club and splash pool.

Tenerife most likely option, Portugal is our preference but too expensive. Ideally no more than 3-4 hours flight.

I have scoured the internet and most options (when independently booking flights and a hotel) are coming out at £4.5-5k.

I spoke to a travel agent yesterday and she said that I would be really pushing it to find something for 5k.

Is that right? A family holiday of 6-7nights in an all inclusive is now £5,000!?! How do people do it!?

With such young kids I wouldn't go all inclusive. I'd book a self catering package with a 2-bedroom apartment. Try TUI or Jet2. Set breakfast and dinner times often aren't convenient with young children and you won't be able to take full advantage of the inclusive booze either!

You can still eat out whenever you want but at least you'll have the option of 7am cereal and toast in your apartment rather than all having to get dressed and ready then wait until 9am or whatever time the hotel breakfast buffet starts.

Personally I wouldn't take the 4yo out of school but that's your call.

What's a 4yo going to miss at school for a week?

They don't even have to be there....

We just did Centre Parce in France and it was like £300 for the week! We got the ferry over and it was such a good holiday! We stayed in Normandy

But Normandy won't be warm in October

Louise0701 · 10/08/2022 10:38

Yes that sounds about right.

titchy · 10/08/2022 10:46

You haven't exactly scoured the internet if people have very quickly found much cheaper holidays. £3k tops.

emmathedilemma · 10/08/2022 10:57

A quick search of Tui and Jet2 (without knowing which airports you can fly from) throws up loads of options under £5k departing on or around the 22nd October which I assume is half term week.

TwigTheWonderKid · 10/08/2022 11:06

October half term is the most expensive week as demand us very high for aces like the Canaries and Cyprus where you have a short flight and guaranteed good weather.

There is absolutely no reason to feel guilty about taking your child out of school for a week whilst they are so young. In my experience that first half term is absolutely exhausting for them and she'll really benefit from a longer break.

rookiemere · 10/08/2022 11:26

It's a bit late to be looking for bargains in October half term.
I agree with others - at that age go outside school holidays. If you could go start of October- which will have better weather and less busy - you can get some cheap holidays.

FoodieToo · 10/08/2022 17:02

A week in Ikos Olivia ( BLISS ) is just over 3000 euro from 16th October !! I know you have to add flights but still.
Another teacher here who takes the kids out EVERY year for skiing ........

As if in this country you could not get food poisoned

I didn’t say they couldn’t, but travel and food poisoning have a lot more risk!

”Holiday food poisoning outbreaks can be widespread in all inclusive holiday resorts. This is because guests often eat at the same buffet-style restaurants. In these places, food may be left out for long periods in hot temperatures, causing it to go off, or staff may fail to follow hygiene regulations when preparing food. Both of these things can lead to holiday food poisoning.”

We looked at October last week and felt they were higher than normal.
Try jet 2 they were definitely cheaper than £5k for us. We ended up booking Easter because it was cheaper and we are going the day before the holidays start as its an inset day and also saves us £600. Fiddle about with the flight times/airports/dates you'll definitely get less than £5k.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/08/2022 08:32

We booked an AI in Turkey yesterday fro our October half term with Jet2, privilege room with 2 bedrooms and private transfers for £3,200. That’s for 2 adults and 2 kids age 16 and 14.

WhatsitWiggle · 13/08/2022 08:48

There's definitely holidays available that meet your criteria for under £3k - packages are often cheaper than booking separately.

But you have missed the boat for the best prices. Book a year ahead to benefit from free kids places.

Afterfire · 13/08/2022 08:54

You don’t need to spend that much.

Jet2 has some much cheaper.

GB Isabel in Tenerife is cheap and has great reviews and an all inclusive option.

I would definitely take your dc out of school- but that’s just me! They won’t miss much!

Endlesslypatient82 · 22/08/2022 07:05

Op- if you’re asking and starting a thread - it’s too much for you, whether financially or just mentally! So go for something cheaper.

I am comfortable with that price, but I would t be comfortable with more and so if I booked one for more - it would sit heavily on me and take the shine off the holiday.

oreo2020 · 22/08/2022 07:15

We paid less than 2k for 4 AI in Greece for 7 nights mid October... admittedly we booked ages ago.

TopGolfer · 22/08/2022 21:34

Half terms are always expensive, have you tried playing around with dates and duration? For example 6 nights flying on the Monday etc. Love Holidays are good for this.

christmas2022 · 23/08/2022 07:26

Any luck yet op? Did you check jet 2?

FelicityRelaxington · 23/08/2022 19:01

I've seen jet2 holidays much cheaper than that for October from our local airport. Have you looked at a further away airport?

somewhereovertherain · 15/04/2023 07:43

£5k for 6/7 nights in Tenerife

fuck that.

we did nearly three weeks in Thailand for that. (okay wasn't school holidays) and 18 nights in Canada in a school holidays for that

and 10 nights in the Caribbean for 1/2 that. - we took the kids out of school.

Macarena1990 · 15/04/2023 18:07

Was going to say the same! We paid £5200 for 10 days in Thailand last half term (5 of us, have to pay adult prices for our eldest) in a gorgeous 5 star hotel. Have booked similar for this october half term for £5400.
