We are in Costa Adeje. Has anyone done this as a day trip? Any tips, where to park etc? Thanks

Oo we’re going there soon! Following for tips!

MaChienEstUnDick · 09/08/2022 17:30

We got picked up by bus, they're keen to reduce cars on the site. If you want to go right to the top (walking only) you need a permit and you'll need proper shoes and to be pretty fit.

There's a cable car that you can buy tickets from.

Go early in the morning before it gets too hot.

But actually my best tip is just to book a tour and get picked up. It's a long day however you do it, we all had altitude problems too so would have struggled doing it independently.

Well we did it in flip flops, but we were young and foolhardy.
It was 30 years ago so I can't recommend a car park, but it is worth the trip.

HeartofTeFiti · 09/08/2022 17:55

We loved it. Went by car about 8 years ago, can’t remember where we parked but we walked quite a long way anyway so it hardly mattered. The landscape is unreal.

lilao · 09/08/2022 17:56

We hired a car and went to Teide in the evening and watched the sunset; it was incredible and free (other than car hire costs which we were doing anyway).

We then got even luckier as a star gazing group happened to be in the same lay-by as us and had to shout loudly so that their whole group could hear so we also got a free talk!

Forgot to mention - the roads were amazing from Adeje, huge wide roads and so easy to drive, not busy at all!

Stichintime · 09/08/2022 18:00

Be aware if you book a coach trip and they can't get enough people on your coach to book the cable car (on ours it was 10) you won't be able to go on. Still worth the trip though. Plenty of stops in the National park and great views. Also the cable car is cancelled if the weather isn't right.

We pre-booked cable car tickets and drove in our hire car. The drive is good but be aware of the route you take - we followed google maps and ended up on hairpin bends up the side of the mountain.

There is parking at the cable car stop but it is quite limited and there is no opportunity for on-road parking. There is a cafe down the road but parking there was way harder than at the cable car place.

The volcanic landscape is amazing and we really enjoyed the ability to stop in a couple of parking areas and wander out into the moonscape.

When we went you could buy slightly cheaper cable car tickets that didn’t include the audio guide, but these sold out first so we got the audio guide ones. To actually get the guide you had to give them something silly like €200 or your passport as a deposit per person. We declined, but it took some convincing them that we were t going to complain later that we didn’t get our audio guide.

We’ve also done a trip to the observatory up there (we did this by coach) and then stargazing. It was really interesting to see the observatory but the stargazing was a bit lacklustre, despite the enthusiasm of the guides. We spent a lot of time queueing to look at blobs down telescopes but the stories to go along with it were great.

We went in December and the temperature difference between sea level (26 degrees), cable car base station and the ‘top’ of the mountain (we didn’t climb to the top although there are still some good walks to be done without the need for the permit) was remarkable.

We've tried twice and not got there yet. First time, didn't realise you needed a permit and when we looked a couple of days before, there were none available for the rest of our holiday.

Second time, we sorted the permit and drove up in the hire car, parked up near the bottom of the cable car, only to find that 1. when we got out of the car it was icicy cold despite it being 30 C down at the coast and 2, the cable car was closed due to high winds.

Which was a good thing because we'd gone up with all the warm clothes we had - jeans, fleece, trainers, long sleeved t-shirts and it wasn't enough. We had a little wander round in the icy wind for 10 mins and then carried on driving and went to Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast instead and had a road trip day.

It’s bloody freezing up there, take a hoodie.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2022 18:40

@MaChienEstUnDick what do you mean by altitude problems?

catsareme14 · 19/08/2022 17:03

It's cold but I also got horribly sunburnt .

QuebecBagnet · 19/08/2022 17:07

You can take the cable car up to fairly near the top without a permit. I’d still recommend pre booking cable car tickets or you could wait/queue for hours. But yes you need to book a permit sometime in advance if you want to hike to the top.

Clymene · 19/08/2022 17:09

We went up in the cable car and had to come straight back down because of altitude sickness! It's very high and if you're at sea level in Costa Adeje, it's a bit of a shock to the system

@MaChienEstUnDick what do you mean by altitude problems?

www.nhs.uk/conditions/altitude-sickness/

Mount Teide summit is 3715m above sea level. Altitude sickness can start at 2,500m.
Advice is usually to drive to about 2,500 and stay there for an hour and see how you feel and only continue if you're well.

We went to the top of a mountain that has a road all the way up in Hawaii. Summit was 4207m - visitor centre was at 2800m to enable/encourage people to stop en route.

Breathing was difficult at the top if you were trying to exert yourself in any way other than sauntering. And it was COLD. Bikini weather on the beach. T-shirt, two fleeces and a waterproof was necessary at the top. And gloves. Don't forget the gloves. Hat - pointless, would have blown away!

We did this and it was incredible!! We booked a full day tour, including dinner, and stayed well into the night with blankets and an astronomy lesson.

They even took us up higher than the cloud line and the photos we took were wonderful.

Would thoroughly recommend!
