Why is it a nightmare to get a sunbed?

mommas2022 · 09/08/2022 16:04

I'm a new mum, due to travel to Costa Del Sol with my DP and 5MO.

The hotel I booked had brilliant reviews, but the last month it has been really down hill due to complaints about sun beds and queuing for them.

Wtf is going on? I don't recall it ever being this bad?

Is anyone else been on holiday recently and had difficulty getting a sunbed?

We don't plan on staying at the pool all day long, but it would be nice to be able to get a bed!

Wish every hotel had a booking system for this 🤦‍♀️

Move the towels. Or just use them if they are new and deny all knowledge. 'Oh no, there was nothing here. The pool staff must have removed them, see there's a sign that they will!'

Great idea x

^or do villas like you’ve looked at.

Gottoomuchgoingon · 10/08/2022 23:31

On hols now and you have to reserve a bed by 8am or there are none left. Several pools here too
We go to the beach instead where the beds are plentiful and spaced out. The shack bar is better there too and the sea is cooler than the bath water pools.

Lordofmyflies · 11/08/2022 08:16

I've come to the conclusion you have 2 options OP. Either use the beach or your balcony for sunbathing or go to a luxury hotel. Some 5* hotels allocate a sunbed per person so you have none of this nonsense. I feel your pain.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 11/08/2022 08:43

Before you go look at pictures to see what colour uniform the hotel staff wear.

Acquire a t-shirt in a similar colour with staff printed in big letter on the back. Maybe a matching lanyard.

At regular intervals throughout the day pop the T-shirt on and remove all possessions on unattended sunbeds. Leave them in a pile.

Remove t-shirt and enjoy an empty sunbed.

If anyone asks where their stuff is say "a member of staff removed it as it was unattended"

Too elaborate? Think of the fun you could have for the price of a cheap t-shirt 😈

I love this idea Wink

I would personally move towels off an unused sun bed. They can confront me if they like.

I would also say in the 70z and 80s only adults had beds. Children just sat in the end

now everyone wants beds for entire family

This is where I think as a family we are prett reasonable. My kids are 8 and 12 we would only get 2 or 3 sunbeds as they are mostly in the pool/on slides. So they either sit in ours (maybe we wouldn't be there at that time) or they share. We don't need 4.

skyeisthelimit · 11/08/2022 10:04

The best hotel I ever stayed in was in Cyprus and they had a sunbed allocation system, so each room was allocated sunbeds/parasols for their holiday. You could ask to move if somebody left and you wanted their spot. (the leaving dates were shown on the parasols).

It was great and made our holiday enjoybale. Previous holidays I have been on we just got lilos and sat on the beach all day.

I would move towels if it was clear that they were unattended as it's just not fair to reserve something and then not use it for hours. It takes a certain type of selfish entitled person to do that.

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 10:25

A lot of you are assuming people reserve beds and don't use them. On our recent holiday to Greece people got up before 7am to reserve and use their sunbeds all day. There were just too many hotel guests for the number of sunbeds!

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 10:25

That's what all hotels should offer!

Carlycat · 11/08/2022 14:21

I'm staying in a hotel where labels are left by sunbeds stating beds left unused for 1.5 hours will have belongings removed to reception. Seems fair

Essexexile · 11/08/2022 15:31

A question if I may: On holiday, our habit is that I always wake early so I go and get two sun beds, I sit for maybe an hour until DH arrives, we then go for breakfast, maybe 30-45 minutes. We go back to our sunbeds then later, go for lunch, maybe up to an hour but usually less. We tend to leave a book each, sun lotion and towels in our beds. Going by some replies on here, we’d be fortunate to find our towels etc still on the beds after breakfast or lunch (we usually return to our beds after lunch, then leave around 4ish, taking all of our stuff with us). Would people seriously throw someone else’s stuff off a bed because they’d gone for lunch?

pinklavenders · 11/08/2022 15:39

@Essexexile that would work well if the hotel has enough sunbeds for all guests.

Unfortunately many hotels build too many rooms for the size of their facilities. That's the main problem imo.

NewMoney1000000 · 11/08/2022 15:43

I went to a holiday in Croatia that had a small charge for sun beds, it stopped all this.

Essexexile · 11/08/2022 15:53

@pinklavenders I agree, I did post earlier in the thread about a Caribbean resort we went to last year, although I think a difference is that there were 4 pools and a large section of beach and some guests would take beds on both the beach and by the swim up pools, which were popular spots. Potentially there were enough beds for everyone if some people weren’t so bloody selfish and entitled.
For our next holiday, we’ve booked a hotel room with a private pool so nice and easy for us 😁

Yep early 90's we had 2 sun beds for DMum and DDad Dsis in the pushchair and me either on a towel on the floor (I liked the heat from the tiles) or laid on the lilo on the floor. Although even when we've all needed sun beds we've never not being able to get any all together

I would be shocked if they did! I feel like making a sign saying "at lunch/breakfast" be back shortly 🤣 would resolve this issue!

HandbagsnGladrags · 11/08/2022 17:46

I think going for lunch or breakfast for an hour is acceptable. It's people leaving empty beds for the majority of the day who are the issue.

countdowntonap · 11/08/2022 21:17

@mommas2022 out of interest, why do you leave the pool at 4? Is it to head to the beach?

I don't, you tagged the wrong person 🤣

OP posts:
Essexexile · 12/08/2022 14:05

@countdowntonap it was me you meant to tag.

We leave the pool around 4 as we’ve usually had enough sun for the day. We go back to our room, relax, shower and get ready to have an early dinner.

StorieAnna · 14/08/2022 20:27

One to book. Sounds great!

On further reading, not as great as I thought, only towels left overnight moved….do people really leave towels overnight to reserve a bed….😳
