Couples holiday but separate rooms - what do others do?

After two recent short breaks DH and I are really not suited to be in same room on holiday!

After 25 years together and grown-up DCs this is not a marriage issue more a convenience one.

We have totally different body clocks (not to mention my/his snoring and the usual irritants)

I am very much an early riser and DH prefers late nights and lie-ins. All fine at home (we have two separate "spare" rooms and a big bedroom for two of us if needed - very lucky in that respect as we can chop and change).

Stupidly after years of finding home arrangements fine we have always booked one room (twin beds, king size double, two doubles etc...) None of this works for us and we end up a wee bit fractious.

I think we could manage in a suite (so two separate bedrooms with same entrance door) or should we go for two separate rooms?

Anyone else have similar issues and how do they book holidays that are affordable but also stress-free and relaxing for both?

We tend to do city breaks or AI, B&B etc...

Book separate holidays?

abovedecknotbelow · 06/08/2022 23:05

Well, after DH taking the split mattress off the floor last night to sleep in the hall - separate rooms or as a minimum a 'family room' with a divider. We'll have to pay more but sleep is worth it. We mostly sleep in separate rooms at homes as one or the or the other of us is snoring.

We have separate rooms at home and book separate rooms on holiday too. It means we also have a bathroom each too

We just get a two bedroom apartment on Airbnb, or at least one with a lounge suitable for sleeping. Tends to be cheaper than two hotel rooms.

Thanks all - how does it work with AI (which we are hoping to do next month) - is there a cheaper option than booking two rooms?

Really pleased it's not just us too!

We’ve had a family type room before (Lydia Maris in Rhodes does them) where one of us has had the bed and one has had the sofa type bed in the other room. All down to my snoring btw, he’s as quiet as a mouse.

DH and I have separate rooms at home, for a weekend break we will share, but prefer separate beds, for longer holidays we usually try for 2 bedroom apartments or suites with at least a bedroom and a sofa bed in the lounge. If we are touring which is our preferred type of holiday we will mix that up with some shared rooms.
I see it as similar to how I won’t fly economy any more.

I’m glad it’s not just me having this problem. In the past I’ve shared with one of the kids, but in the future they won’t be coming with us. It’s just the two of us from now on, and I refuse to share.

For AI some places do interconnecting family rooms. That might be cheaper than two separate rooms.
