I have 4 destinations that I want to do - Bourg en Bresse, near Lyon, Dijon, Augsburg and Innsbruck. Perhaps Ulm. I know that they are an odd selection, but has anyone got any suggestions of how best to do it, and other destinations that I might enjoy. I'm travelling by train and bus.

Try the man in seat 61 web site

Or Deutsche Bahn web site that uses to be good for lots of Europe

Rail Europe app is good. Presume you're staying at least one night in each destination? You should be able to use the app to plan and book which train to catch - also shows the prices. (Way cheaper than UK fares Angry)

London - Paris - Dijon
Dijon - Bourg en Bresse - there is a direct train 1 hr 35 mins
From Bourg - trains to Innsbruck go via Geneva and Zurich
Innsbruck to Augsburg via Munich (love Munich so great for a stopover)
Augsburg to Brussels via Frankfurt - trains stop at Ulm and also Cologne which are both nice places to visit.
Brussels Eurostar back to UK.

Raileurope.co.uk or trainline.com for buying tickets. Bahn.de for working out routes and timetables - you can see the intermediate stops on any route.
oebb.at for Austrian trains - they go on sale 6 months in advance and you can get a bargain for early booking,

I love a European rail trip, me! Hit me with it 😀😙

For example - on oebb.at, for random date in November - Innsbruck to Augsburg via Munich is 17 euros. Extra 10 euros for 1st class. Geneva to Innsbruck 59 euros.

DB's website allows you to include a stopover of up to 48 hours in a specified place. This can be cheaper than two separate tickets for longer distance journeys.

thank you, it's very useful. Any ideas for good places to visit en route? I was thinking of Regensburg

Regensburg is not exactly en route but of course you could plan around that. Other places definitely worth a stopover mentioned above.

MissAmbrosia · 05/08/2022 20:18

As to what you would enjoy, you didn't really explain your random selection of destinations

balalake · 06/08/2022 08:39

Regensburg I liked but only really half a day needed. If you are in Munich, worth a day trip to Tegernsee for the lake and the beautiful church.

MaMaLa321 · 06/08/2022 11:47

yes, I know they're pretty random. The reason is
Bourg en Bresse - the mausoleum of Margaret of Austria
Innsbruck - the mausoleum of her father, Maximillian I
Aubsberg - the Fuggerei - the almhouses built by Jacob Fuger
Dijon - links to the Burgundian dukes.

So I want other places worth visiting while we do the trip. They don't necessarily have to be of historical interest, though that's a bonus. I was thinking of Ulm because of the cathedral.
