Cheapest (but still good) city break

Inspired by the city break threads and where would you go threads I'd love to take one of these city breaks for myself.

My budget does not stretch for so I am looking for somewhere that tends to be cheaper to fly to, book hotels and food and drinks.

Can anyone suggest somewhere?

I'm thinking maybe Edinburgh as it's still in the UK, but if I were to go further. Where should I be searching??

Krakow is lovely and v cheap!

kittythames · 04/08/2022 07:23

We loved Bucharest, Romania and it was super cheap .

rookiemere · 04/08/2022 07:23

I found Budapest to be fairly cheap and a gorgeous city to visit.

I live in Edinburgh- eating out and attractions are expensive compared to much of UK. It would only be cheap if you can book a Premier Inn when the rooms first come out.

Doidontimmm · 04/08/2022 07:25

I live in Edinburgh and it’s definitely not cheap!

I heard Sarajevo is great (for the coffee) - it's on my bucket list!

Berlin and other smaller German cities, particularly in the east part of the country, are very cheap. I regularly fly to Berlin for £50 return. Hotels are reasonably cheap if booked far enough in advance. Eating out is becoming a bit more expensive but still €10-15 for a main so you can have dinner for less than €20 pp. Lower end restaurants are just as tasty and good quality as the more expensive ones.

I’d also say Krakow, beautiful and very reasonable, or perhaps Prague however less so in recent years.

Justfortherandomquestions · 04/08/2022 07:38

Yes to Krakow as suggested. Beautiful city and you can visit Auschwitz nearby if you wished.
We went to Porto in Portugal a few years ago which was super cheap. We've always found Portugal very cheap in terms of buying food and drink etc. Porto is beautiful- lovely cobbled streets- and if you like port then you're away!

Tallin

HDready · 04/08/2022 07:51

Krakow or Vilnius

ChilliPB · 04/08/2022 08:04

Tallinn, Krakow, Bratislava, Budapest.

I live in Edinburgh too and eating out/drinks aren’t cheap however if it’s cheaper to get there it might balance out. There’s a lot of touristy things to do in the city that is free/cheap - wandering around the Royal Mile, walking up Arthur’s Seat etc.

What time of year?

Riverlee · 04/08/2022 08:08

Lille or Amsterdam - plus you can go there by train.

Thinking maybe October three nights.

Was even thinking if I could get there and stay for a reasonable cost. I could even do supermarket meal deals for lunch etc to keep cost down.

I’d try for a premier inn in Oct but book soon as gets busy! Try and avoid school holiday week here.

wingingit33 · 04/08/2022 11:24

We've booked Paris two nights in October £78 Eurostar return

Mushroo · 04/08/2022 11:26

Lisbon or Porto are very cheap when you are there.

Alternatively, smaller German cities (Nuremberg, Hamburg) are dirt cheap to fly to.

All of the above are lovely for a city break!

MissAmbrosia · 05/08/2022 19:40

Krakow, Wroclaw, Lisbon, Bratislava. Don't think Budapest is that cheap any more and Prague definitely isn't. Tallinn is on my to do list.

MissAmbrosia · 05/08/2022 19:41

We also flew to Zadar, Croatia with Ryanair a few years back - that was lovely, but it wasn't October.

Oblomov22 · 05/08/2022 19:45

I disagree with Talllinn, flights there were the most expensive European city I've ever paid.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 05/08/2022 19:59

Start by looking at sky scanner to find cheapest flights from the most convenient airport from you.
Then once you’ve got a choice of cities we can give you a better idea of where is cheapest.

MallampatiCatty · 05/08/2022 20:04

Poland, bought flights there for £15 return a few months ago Saturday to Monday for a city break.

Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland all cheap trips though.

I did a British airways deal with Stockholm for a weekend for £160 in April for flights, 2 nights 4* hotel in centre with sauna and breakfast included but obviously it's not cheap once there. There are good deals out there!

Just back from Budapest and I was shocked at how much we spent - it certainly wasn't cheap!

Another vote for Poland. We've been to Krakow and Warsaw. They are both very cheap once you get there so you will be able to enjoy yourself more without worrying about budget.

switchoff1 · 07/08/2022 07:47

If you don’t mind Ryan Air then you can go on their website and pick an airport and shows you the deals. Can then also just search the month and see the best rates.

Agree Krakow. We love it
