Halloween in New England

Hi, I have a 'significant' birthday in early November this year and have always wanted to see New England in the fall. I'm a huge Halloween fan and think that nowhere probably goes for it more than the US so would love to combine the two! Would really love any suggestions on great places to stay and fun things to do, especially if there are events where we can feel more like locals . We will probably go the last week in October and come home in the first week of November. I'm so excited to get planning - but other than flights to Boston, where do I begin?! Totally flexible with where we stay and what we see. Totally grateful for any ideas and tips!

You need to go to Salem MA for Hallowe'en.

I don't have any suggestions to make but this sounds incredible! Hopefully someone will be along with some knowledge but I'm adding this to my list of holiday ideas.

We are planning this for next year. I have been browsing on a Salem Facebook page and they suggest there would be no hope now of getting Halloween accommodation now for this year.

sounds amazing! I was in LA for halloween as a coincidence & the effort was 👍🏼

From Boston, get the ferry to Provincetown on Cape Cod. Or train to Concord (home of Louisa May Alcott amongst others).

BlueKaftan · 31/07/2022 14:29

Salem has a fantastic Halloween vibe but book in early!

CycleQueen · 31/07/2022 14:40

Oo yes definitely Salem, thanks for the link and I am really loving the ferry and train ideas as well thank you! I know accommodation may be an issue but not too fussed if we have to drive in to see the action and then stay out of town.

Yay! I too find the genocide and hunting of women and girls as a cultural tradition enacted for over a hundred years great fun!

I live bear Bergen-Belsen and can’t wait til people start treating this the same way. Ooooooooo. That way we can all make some money. Yippee. Slow hand clap.

There are few things better than New England in the fall! I don't have anything useful to suggest re: Halloween, but just wanted to mention that in case it's the foliage you're also hoping to see, I'd double check a foliage map before booking to make sure your dates line up with when the colors will be at their best. New England tends to go through the color changes earlier than elsewhere, and different states (and areas of states) will differ in terms of when the leaves are at their peak. Usually colors are best in early/mid-October, in case there's any way to start around the middle of the month and finish with Halloween just before you go. Obviously not relevant if you're mostly going for the Halloween celebrations sorry, but thought it was worth mentioning!

Vermont has some really lovely towns - you could look into Woodstock or Stowe. There are a heap of local activities in the fall out here, from hay rides and apple picking to pumpkin picking and hiking.

Ignoring my rant above, I used to live in New England and the dogwoods are a thing to behold and it’s generally a beautiful place. But that’s at a different time from the cashfest that is Halloween.

CycleQueen · 31/07/2022 15:18

Aha yes the cash fest is now coming through loud and clear, in which case I may focus on the fall and I am loving the sound of autumnal activities @octoberfarm thank you.
I’m not going to comment on the genocide rant @Cautiouselectric but if you do have any top tips for lovely places in New England I am all ears!

@octoberfarm that fall map is fantastic, thank you! Definitely going to be using it as I think we are going to be getting there almost at the end of the most vibrant part of the season.

We had a fantastic stay on Martha's Vineyard which oincided with Halloween, it was a fantastic place and I'd go back in a heartbeat

CycleQueen · 31/07/2022 15:47

Thanks @dalisdrippingclock , I will look into that. Looks like Salem is massively booked up and we would be happy having some spooky fun in an different location.

We stayed in Edgartown, but the island is easy to explore. The food was excellent and everyone seemed very welcoming and friendly.
