Given recent baggage issues what is best these days?

And if hand luggage do you do the guarantee cabin luggage option

@Fatballs
DH now has a hand luggage suitcase just for camera equipment. So on many of our holidays, that’s his hand luggage sorted!!Just a few pairs of pants!!

If you cannot wash anything for 2 weeks just doing hand luggage is a non starter! I’m happy to wait snd have decent clean clothes. We are going to Chicago next and might do hand luggage only. It’s 5 nights. After that it’s the Antarctic so it’s layers and layers and it won’t go in hand luggage. We go business so we get bags pretty quickly.

A while ago a friend of mine spent three months in the Antarctic mainly eating seal meat. He didn’t get a chance to do any washing. On his return, customs insisted on searching all his luggage. Apparently, they regretted it.

Hand luggage no question.

Bluebellsand · 30/07/2022 16:02

Only time I paid for hold luggage, was when I took dc with me.

PurBal · 30/07/2022 16:03

Whilst I could do hand luggage only why bother? Lugging it around the airport is a PIA and waiting for bags the other end is no big deal (so long as it doesn’t get lost of course), you’re on holiday and not in a rush. And you can bring back souvenirs!

Bluebellsand · 30/07/2022 16:05

I hand-wash my clothes in the bath/ shower (depending on what the hotel has) before bed, if I can't find a laundrette close by.

There's been a bit of a crackdown on these bring it all onboard travellers on some airlines. I've seen people really pushing it with the allowances and knocking people out practically with all their shit. Planes run out of room with all these abusers.

Not everyone on a plane is going on holiday. I take maybe 4 or 6 holiday flights out of 50+ each year. I am definitely in a rush when travelling.

But why are they called abusers if they’re just bringing onboard the allowance they paid for?

i always check in luggage because I hate feeling cold, hot or wet. That means I take a lot of clothes for different seasons. I also don’t want to spend £££ using hotel laundry service or getting my clothes wrecked by them. If I go for a week, I don’t do any laundry and just pack way more than 7 days of clothes. Hiking shoes, trainers and sandals take lots of space too.

""Re easy jet- I’ve travelled several times with the small under seat cabin bag from Gatwick this year. Not once was it measured or was I asked to put it in the box to check the size. Although it was the small size, on every occasion I put it in the overhead locker.
my son always travels light with just a rucksack and has never been “ measured”"

I've just got off an easyJet flight where someone had their cabin bag removed and they had to get off the plan and check it into the hold, so I wouldn't risk a cabin bag bigger than their allowance.

Knittingnanny2 · 30/07/2022 19:08

I’ve never seen a flight attendant on board checking so that was really unlucky

catfunk · 30/07/2022 19:13

If I'm going somewhere hot I only ever do hand luggage - speedy boarding with easyJet so a small cabin case and a handbag.
I wear minimal make up on holiday so don't take many toiletries just mini shampoo and conditioner and moisturiser. hair dries naturally so I just take straighteners, all my clothes are thin fabric and roll up small. I just wear socks and pool sliders to the airport and pack a nice pair of shoes to wear for dinner etc. I buy suncream over there. Kindle instead of loads of books. I do take a beach towel but even that's a small microfibre one.

Lots of them are not just bringing on-board the allowance they pay for and that is abusing the system. Some bags are huge. Pre covid I was frequent flyer on easyjet and Ryanair and saw so many people having their bags rejected as they didn't fit the size criteria. Rightly so, there is a limited amount of space in a cabin for storing bags.

Knittingnanny2 · 30/07/2022 21:22

I agree. I’m meticulous about my cabin bag size and get annoyed with those who lug great big backpacks on board!

Passthecake30 · 31/07/2022 20:56

We’re flying with jet2 for 13 nights and will definitely be taking hold luggage, 2 adults and 2 dcs, with loads of toiletries, towels and clean clothes - I don’t mind washing underwear out at a push but I’m not up for washing everyone’s clothes in the bath. We will probably take 3 cases for the hold

MarshaBradyo · 31/07/2022 21:04

Usually we go places where towels are provided, shampoo and soap etc plus do a laundry service (although it’s exxy)

But takes a lot of load out

Recently travelled back through Heathrow - only got our checked luggage 2 hours after landing, and we weren't the last. Wasn't a problem for us, and we never would have managed in hand luggage, but something to consider if you're in a rush or getting collected.
There is so much left luggage piled up at Heathrow!

Knittingnanny2 · 01/08/2022 08:35

@Passthecake30 i agree, wouldn’t have been able to do hand luggage for a holiday with 3 children.
one advantage of retirement….. no children, toys etc to pack!
