What can I pack to give me shade by the pool?

We are going on holiday next week - mainly activity and pool based. From reviews of the hotel it seems there are fewer parasols than ideal. Any suggestions as to what I could take that would work instead, or to extend the shade given by one parasol?

Large brimmed hat and cover up shawls

Something like this?

I just googled 'sunbed shade'

To extend the shade from one parasol you can take a big beach blanket (or buy one on holiday) and peg it to the parasol using large pegs. Saw lots of people doing this in Mallorca to extend the shade given from the parasol. These pegs were in all the supermarkets.

Pegs! I always take some and clip my sarong / towel / whatever to the edge of the parasol so the sun can#t get in underneath

Wow thank you - I wan't expecting so many replies so quickly! I like the look of the portable parasols but I think they may be too long for our luggage, so will go with the pegs option. Large brimmed hat for me but don't want to rely on just that for my wriggly children!

Thanks very much!

I agree with pegging towels etc to parasols if you can get your hands on a parasol which sounds like you might not be able to. Alternatively when you first get there and watch the sun and see if any of trees buildings etc create natural shade at the hottest part of the day and park yourself there.

Windbreaks Stuck into soft ground or with feet will help protect you when sun has moved from over head and it's starting to lower but no good in the middle of the day , (unless you get a couple and peg a sheet over the top of them and crawl underneath. )

Buggy parasols will fit in your case but obviously don't give as much shade

We tend to buy a cheap portable parasol for the beach when we’re away, usually about £10 from beach shops. We tend not to use them by the pool, but if there wasn’t enough provided I definitely would. Unfortunately, even though lightweight, they don’t fit in our case so we have to give it away and get a new one each time.
