Rest stops/service stations whilst driving in France.

I am asking on behalf of a friend about rest stops/service stations on French motorways. I remember reading on here that French service stations can be a bit grotty but something else was recommended? Thank you.

There are two types of rest stops on French autoroutes, the ones that have petrol, shops, sometimes restaurants, and loos and the ones that are just called 'Aires' which have very basic toilets (yes can be grotty) and picnic areas. As a general rule the ones with petrol have (slightly) better loos. The signage makes it clear which is which before you turn off as the petrol ones have a petrol pump logo and a crossed knife and fork.

A warning on both though - during August they will be heaving between 12 and about 1.30 as that's when any French people on the move will be stopping for lunch!

Driven down through France many times. I hate the tea you get in service stations so we take a little water heater thingy and decent milk in a flask and brew our own. It makes a nice excuse to stop off and have a proper picnic at one of their picnic tables. We buy a nice baguette and stuff at a supermarket or shop on the way. So much nicer than the food you get in service stations.

They service stations/aires a mixed bag, never come across any particularly grotty ones but we tend to avoid long road journeys in peak season.

Remember for the fully native look whilst picnicking at the aires, especially the more rural ones, you need a table cloth (and clothes pegs if using one of the tables)....😊

@notimagain yes I agree about the tablecloth and pegs! Great if the picnic table is a bit grotty. I bought one at a table top sale in Brittany. Only a couple of euros.

We've driven through France a good number of times and have only been unlucky with one grubby aire. I've yet to visit a bad services, although one or two were a bit tired. The biggest issue we have with both the services and aires is that the DCs figured our pretty quickly they generally include a play area, and as a result need the loo surprisingly often.

I’d say the service stations and aires are much improved nowadays. I’ve been driving through France with parents and now with my husband for over 30 years and I used to give my parents nightmares about toilet stops as if I didn’t deem it acceptable I’d refuse to go and we’d have to keep stopping to find an acceptable one. I haven’t had an issue with the toilets for a long time. The only thing I would say is always have your own toilet roll as it can be sparse in the aires.

Sorry for late reply but thank you very much for the further helpful replies. Sounds like the toilets are much better than they used to be and good tip for my friend to take toilet roll with her.

I love the steak haché and frites at the service stations!
