Maldives- best house reefs?

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choice of resorts in the Maldives. DH and I are looking to go for 2 weeks. We love fish and are content with a quiet island where we can lounge around, snorkel and watch the wildlife go by. DH is a keen scuba diver so would be looking to go out on dives for a few of the days we're there. I'm more interested in snorkelling from the resort everyday without having to rely on a boat. Any recommendations?

There’s a great house reef that is reachable from the beach at Vilamendhoo. The diving was excellent too.

Bandos, it's the oldest dive school in the Maldives, just 15 minutes on a speedboat from Mahe.

Great house reef for snorkelling.

It's not the most glitzy of resorts but I don't think you would be disappointed.
So many happy memories.

Ellhaidhoo is spectacular for diving.

Kuramathi has a wonderful house reef and a really professional dive centre, with one of the few proper hypobaric chambers on resort islands in the Maldives. House reef snorkelling is easily accessed and goes the length of the island. They also offer really good snorkelling and dive trips - can see manta rays, turtles, hammerheads.
It’s my favourite place in the world. Also the actual resort is stunning.

Thank you all for the brilliant suggestions! Lots of googling to do now.

2nd the recommendation for Vilamendhoo, where I had my first Maldive(an?) holiday. The house reef is truly wonderful for snorkelling and diving albeit it was bleached from El Niño when I went 5 years ago. It also had an good range of excursions for sea turtles, whale sharks, further diving etc.

It’s in the South Ari Atoll which I believe is on the migration route for whale sharks, so if you want a chance to see them a resort in this area should be a good bet.

I've just found a 30 minute video from a couple who visited Vilamendhoo with lots of clips of the sealife. It looks perfect!

Would absolutely recommend Vilamendhoo - just visited recently and the snorkelling was super, as was everything else. We did Kuramathi on the same trip but it was nowhere near as enjoyable as Vilamendhoo.

Another recommendation for Vilamendhoo. Went when I was pregnant, so could only snorkel while DH was diving. But did lots of hanging out with a huge sting ray, turtles, octopus, fish and sharks. Still slightly bitter that DH saw whale sharks 😂

Lilly beach! It’s ultra all inclusive and family friendly as well if that’s important to you.

DH would be over the moon to see a whale shark!

Family friendly isn't important to us. We normally book adults only hotels at other resorts but they seem less common in the Maldives. To be honest, we don't even need luxury accommodation. Just a good house reef and decent food. I'm a vegetarian and still feel sad about a holiday to fuerteventura when all the veg in the all-inclusive was clearly from tins. We went out one night to escape it only to find the same thing in the restaurant we tried. It's been 10 years and I'm still not over it.

We saw whale sharks on our trip last month. You don’t need to dive - there are snorkelling excursions where you can see them. Food was excellent - lots of delicious veggie curries. It’s not uber-fancy but the “luxury” is the barefoot desert island vibe and the staff were fabulous. It was a much better experience than the plusher resort that we went to for the second part of the holiday (which was full to the brim of bloody wannabe influencers obsessed with selfies!)

WonderingWanda · 24/07/2022 21:04

Filitheyo has an amazing house reef!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/07/2022 21:07

I’m vegetarian and have been to the Maldives a few times. Food has never been a problem. They cater really well for vegetarians. Loads of delicious veg curries, the food has always been fantastic.

If you’ve never been to the Maldives you are in for a treat. It’s the most most beautiful place ever.
