I want to prove to myself I can do it ! I’m feeling at loss with my life at the moment. I don’t have any talent, I don’t have any hobbies but I love going on holidays. I’m married with 2 dcs but I want to do something for myself. I want to go on an adventure! Where ?? I looked at going to Montreal for a week or Sweden starting in Stockholm and finishing in Lapland but would love your suggestions please !

Salzberg is lovely. You can get a Salzberg card and once you have bought it all attractions are free to enter. They have very flat boats that spin and waltz on the river to waltzing music.

What do you most like to do on holiday?
I believe that most people on holiday alone go to restaurants & cultural places. Bars if young. Is that what you like to do?

PandaOrLion · 22/07/2022 23:41

What kind of holiday do you like? I’d want to be seeing different things. I’d also want to go for a short time as I get bored in the evenings if I’m away for too long alone - prob two/three night city break and build it up from there!

Thank you for answering my thread ! I’m 45 and I like to chill on holiday and explore ! All inclusive are not my cup of teas ! I love seating at terrace of coffee and watching people go by ! I love to immerse myself in a new culture. I think that yes 7 days would be too much to start with so probably yes just a weekend and build from that !

I'd love this but would start small and build up to a week away.

How about a 3 night city break to start with. Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Lisbon, Reykjavik, Oslo, Budapest... Somewhere with plenty to do where you can fill your day, sit at cafés, watch the world go by and relax back in your room.

I'm very comfortable travelling on my own but I like to have a plan and know that I have somewhere to read my book with a coffee/wine and a hotel in a part of the city that feels safe and ok to walk on my own.

perimenofertility · 23/07/2022 00:45

I've traveled far and wide on my own, you will have a great time wherever you go!
I've done the Sweden journey you mention but I did it the opposite direction - started at the top in Lapland and took an overnight sleeper train (which was really comfortable!) south to Stockholm. I recommend that.
Any European city (I'm assuming you are UK) will be any easy but fun trip

Besttobe8001 · 23/07/2022 00:46

Would you consider Slovenia? It's beautiful, clean and safe. I had a great time there on my own in the capital and in their version of the lake District.

Throughabushbackwards · 23/07/2022 00:49

If I could escape on my own I'd pack a rucksack, buy a eurail pass then spend a week or two going anywhere and everywhere with no plans at all.

Dubrovnik, Vienna, Salzburg all fit the bill.

I did 10 days a few years ago from Bratislava to Vienna to Salzburg to Munich. Bratislava is nice but very small a day is enough, took a boat up to Vienna, it's very relaxed, lots to do, and so much culture, definitely get ina night at the opera - not normally my thing but it was amazing.

Salzberg is small but love too, both are ideal for sitting outside coffee shops watching the world go by. Felt very safe in all and very easy to get around.

Dubrovnik and Prague are also good for the same thing.

Stockholm wasn't one of my favourites. It's not very friendly. I was there is Winter so that's probably colouring my view.

Rejykavik is fabulous, one of my favourite places but you'll need to drive or get a tour bus to see the best of it. It's also far more expensive than all the rest. I think there are easier places to navigate solo but it's definitely worth a trip.

Why don't you do some kind of course abroad, so you do something you're interested in in the morning eg cookery, language lessons, walking - and then you're free to explore in the afternoon. I've done a few language courses like this on my own and they're good fun. You meet people on the course and they often do trips and activities in the afternoon so you can go with your classmates or just go off and do your own thing. There's usually a good mix of ages. There's lots of organisations that do it. think the one I've used was called Go Learn To. I think they're great.

I've just looked and they're now called notintheguidebook.com

OldWivesTale · 23/07/2022 01:16

Sorry, notintheguidebooks.com

Rome was great for wandering around and people watching.

HeddaGarbled · 23/07/2022 01:28

Fly, drive or Eurostar?

ShrillSiren22 · 23/07/2022 01:33

Have you considered doing a group tour with a company like World Expeditions or Explore! ? I’ve done a few with various companies, although I tend to do more physical ones and it’s often about 50% couples/ friends and 50% solo travellers. It’s a great way to see places with local guides and not feel awkward as you’re always with half a dozen or so other people too.

Fireflygal · 23/07/2022 08:04

If you're south based - Eurostar to Amsterdam. So straightforward, train to city centre and you're likely to find a hotel in walking distance. It's a very easy city to walk around, museums, pancakes houses, coffee shops

GrandSlamFinalee · 23/07/2022 08:09

As you’re already considering Montreal, may I recommend New York.

It’s a brilliant city with so much to do, but also quieter areas that you can just sit in a cafe, watch people walk by and not feel like you’re wasting your time. 4-5 days is in my opinion a perfect amount of time for your first time there.

The transport system is really well organised and signposted. You have parks, the Highline, the Village for walks. Watch a show one evening. Do a couple of walking tours. You decide how much you actually want to do, knowing that you’ll get the NYC experience anyway but can set your own pace.

Mind you, it’s expensive. But the flight is easy (6-7 hours in air) and if you can go at anytime of the year, there are bargains to be found.

A French village near a city. I haven’t found the perfect one yet, but Chinon was nice

City break in a place with cultural sights would suit you. Paris, Amsterdam, Rome...

poorbuthappy · 23/07/2022 08:15

I would be getting on the Eurostar and going to Bruges to start.
