How far would you drive for a week's holiday?

Just wondering what would be the tolerable limit for others (if driving alone - I'm a single parent travelling with my tween). I've driven 11 or 12 hours each way when going on a two-week holiday but now we are going for only a week to a destination around 10-11 hours away (I'm already on the continent) and wondering if it's reasonable or we should fly or go by train. We will definitely need a car at our destination.

We drive 10+ hours for a weeks holiday and sometimes have done that for a 5 day holiday!

Yodaisawally · 18/07/2022 19:01

We've done 14 hours for a week several times, we love a road trip though.

Chewbecca · 18/07/2022 19:01

I think 10-11 hours drive is fine for a week! Assume you will drive over 2 days?

MotherOfCrocodiles · 18/07/2022 19:03

Have done 10h for a weekend pre kids when I enjoyed road trips

These days 10h has to be justified by a longer stay although I am doing it for six days next week 😮

Yika · 18/07/2022 19:04

Yes, would drive over 2 days. It would certainly save a fair bit of money when thinking about car hire...

Thanks for the responses - it doesn't feel so crazy now. I do enjoy driving but it can also be tiring of course.

We’re in mainland Europe too and have done fairly long drives for a week‘s holiday in the past, if it’s the most logical way to travel. The difference: if it’s over 7-8 hours driving we would tend to split it into two days and make the journey part of the holiday - find a nice place to stop off overnight etc. That’s what we’re doing this year. Going from northern central Europe down south with a night in the Bavarian Alps on the way there, and Linz and Prague on the way back. It’s a matter of personal preference really - we would just be really fed up with spending so long in the car, and I‘d be worried about getting too tired to concentrate if there were big traffic jams slowing things down. I know a lot of people would just get it over and done with in one go though.

Ylvamoon · 18/07/2022 19:13

We easily do 10-12 hours for a weeks holiday.

We usually travel on a Saturday- roads are a bit quieter!

greywinds · 18/07/2022 19:13

4 days each way - then it's a road trip!

Yika · 18/07/2022 19:26

I do love a road trip...

4 days driving at each end of the week or are the 4 days part of the week, so only 3 actual days holiday? If the latter there is no way I would go so far. If it's actually an 11 day trip it would be ok.

We often drive 12 hours for a holiday, probably not for even as long as a week now that I think about it!
We live in the US and Southern Florida is approx 12 hours driving for us, occasionally we break it up over two days but usually just get it over with in one go with a couple of meal breaks on the way.

jackstini · 18/07/2022 19:35

Not in a million years personally

But then I have a DH and a DS who get car sick

I just think surely there must be somewhere lovely within half that (unless it's visiting family) or do a short flight for the same carbon emissions...

We could stretch out the time including the drive to about 10 days in total so leaving us 6 days at the destination (wonder if it's enough).

I'd rather not fly if I can avoid it so thinking also about train which we enjoy (wouldn't be any quicker in hours but we wouldn't need to stop for breaks) but then the car rental is so expensive...

We did 4 days either side of the 7 - it is so convenient if you can drive

Yika · 18/07/2022 20:04

Yes I like going door to door and being able to load up the car with all our stuff!

TattiePants · 18/07/2022 21:45

Same here, I love being able to load the car up with everything we need and driving door to door with lots of stops on the way. Just done a quick check of our road trip starting next week and that's 32 hours but over 2 1/2 weeks. The longest I'd do in a week is an 8 hour journey (NE to Cornwall).

whiteroseredrose · 18/07/2022 21:57

We used to drive from Manchester to near Valencia. Usually 2 nights on the way down and three on the way back (because of the dog) - then 9 nights there.

We also drove to the Loire Valley for a week (and did it in a day which was a bit much).

SortingOffice · 18/07/2022 22:10

I drove 3 hours to Norfolk last week. Never again. I'll stick to Yorkshire or fly.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/07/2022 22:52

I'm laughing - I'm obviously a wuss! I drove 4 hours to my holiday on Saturday, plus time for a stop - and that felt Herculean 😂

I simply couldn't imagine 10 + hours driving (single parent with 3 DC who appear to bicker increasingly as they get older 🤦🏻‍♀️)

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 18/07/2022 22:56

We often drive with DC from London to the Highlands, so a similar duration. I find it exciting! Love watching the scenery change. Not to say it’s easy with the kids, they do argue, but they enjoy the adventure.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 18/07/2022 22:58

Meant to add, we usually go for about 10 days, including driving time.

Yika · 18/07/2022 23:17

Thanks so much for the input and inspiration - very varied I see! I think I am probably somewhere in the middle, the 8-hour limit mentioned by a pp sounds about right to me as an upper limit so will take an alternative mode of travel this time.

AllLopsided · 18/07/2022 23:31

I couldn't go far at all as I have pain sitting, so if I'm there and DH is driving we tend to go for about 6-7 hours, which gets us to a decent number of places. Last year we did a two centre trip with 6-7 hours on the middle Saturday too. It was ok but very boring for me (I have to lie down in the back). Anyway, not really relevant! My DH is happy to do 13 hours in a day to his mum's but I refuse to accompany him! (He does stop a couple of times (plus a stop at le shuttle). You could easily break a longer trip with a night in a hotel and a walk around a nice town in the morning...

RampantIvy · 18/07/2022 23:36

Several hours standing in traffic jams on the M5 on more than one occasion have put us off ever going back to Cornwall. So I would say 5 or 6 maximum in the UK.

I might be doing a road trip in California next year, but it is nothing like driving on our overcrowded roads.
