Travel money cards - confused!

We are heading to Malaysia and Australia soon, and I've been thinking about getting some kind of travel money card instead of a load of cash (especially for Australia, we have some Ringgits already, and have family in Malaysia who we are staying with).

Initially I was wondering about the Post Office one, but have since seen one from Starling, and a friend mentioned Revolut, but I looked at the website and got quite confused by it! Finance is not really my thing...

Can anyone recommend one? Essentially, I want something that will be as easy to use as my cards over here, but without the extra added fees, and a reasonable exchange rate. Also needs to be something I can get hold of quickly as we fly in 2 weeks 😬

Thank you!

I’ve got a starling card. It was very quick to set up an account and the card arrived quickly. Just transfer some money to it and use the card as you would here. The bank doesn’t charge for transactions but you might sometimes pay a local atm fee.

Get yourself a Halifax Clarity credit card and a Chase or Starling debit card.

Don’t just rely on one card.

Also look at Currensea.

I started looking at this today and had my mind similarly blown, to the extent that I decided to find out how much the fees are with a view to just paying them.

It turns out NatWest is waiving all overseas payment fees on their cards for the summer!

Try Monzo, there are no fees to withdraw abroad.

I’m reliably told by a friend who travels for work that a Wise card is better than all others.

We use Revolut. Used it all over the world, it's great. DH deals with all that stuff not because I'm an idiot but he works in finance and understands fx rates and he's always impressed with how quickly it updates and how easy it is to transfer money to it and back.

We use a Revolut card. We are away currently, and surprised how many places will not accept cash, so a card is essential.

I've only used Starling but found it really easy. I have my Barclays app on my iPhone and transferred money over to the Starling card and used it on my phone to pay for everything. I didn't need to use the physical card for anything. The exchange rate was also on a par with the best rate I found and got some travel cash at.

There are. I had one.

I've just opened a Monzo account, as I don't anticipate withdrawing much cash, it was straightforward

£200 over 30 days isn’t very much at all.

BEAM123 · 18/07/2022 18:08

You are right, I just checked. But when paying by card abroad there are no fees. I usually pay by card.

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 23/07/2022 07:05

Thanks all. Have opened a Starling account, not received the card yet, but hopefully it should be here soon, and it's on my phone already.

Now to hope all the flights go ok!

Try Monzo, there are no fees to withdraw abroad.

As long as you use Monzo as a proper account with regular deposits and DDs.
Otherwise there are charges
