Do rear facing travel car seats exist?!

Can anyone recommend a travel car seat? Ideally rear facing? They seem to be non existent unless we spend a fortune! The only one I’ve found is the Nachfolger which is £320 😬 We’ve travelled before and hired a car with a car seat, but we’re doing a few short breaks and getting taxis; and have a holiday coming up where the car hire can’t guarantee rear facing.

If you only need one up to 18kg, the Joie ones can be quite good - Joie Steadi/Stages/Tilt?

What stage? We have Recaro zero 1.

Danikm151 · 19/07/2022 21:37

Joie tilt 🙂

I used a britax two way elite for this

How old / big is the child? We live in London and dont have a car so only use car seats in taxis. We have been recommended the Joie Stages as it rear faces to 18kg and is fastened in using the belt but no tethers so easily transferred between vehicles.

Just wanted to update here and say that we invested in a Nachfolger and we love it!

Can you use the on a flight too?
We've been using a CARES harness for our 19 month old on long flights but I think he'd sleep better in a car seat. It's so hard to find a rear facing one that's airline approved.

Nachfolger has the plane approval, but good luck finding an airline that will allow you to fit it, as well as having the space.

It is the only airline approved one though unless you can fit him in an infant carrier.

The other airline option is to take something like the Joie Steadi and hope for the best - most airlines don't actually insist on the TUV approval, but they do ask that it can be fitted with a lap belt. You can physically fit these seats with just a lap belt in the forward facing mode but it's not an approved fitting. The gamble is whether the airline staff are aware of this/want to check this. But I've seen people use them (on facebook). You can then use it rear facing in a car at your destination.
