Qatar Airlines - any compensation experts?

Hello, I'm looking to see if anyone here is knowledgeable on compensation rights for delayed travel.

Family have just returned from Australia and their outward journey from Scotland was a bit of a nightmare.

They had an Edinburgh to Perth flight on Saturday, via Dublin and Doha, with the Edin-Dub flight delayed by about 1.5 hrs I believe, meaning they missed their Dub-Doha flight.

They were then given accommodation in Dublin for 2 nights (no idea why they weren't given seats on the Sunday morning flight to Doha 🤷‍♀️) and then had to fly Dublin-Heathrow, Heathrow-Doha, Doha-Perth on the Monday - 2 days later!

They also haven't seen their luggage since they boarded the first plane in Edinburgh, but that's a seperate issue I suppose.

I've had a look on the Qatar site but can't make sense of what is applicable in this situation. I don't think their Edin-Dub flight delay was as long as 2 hours and most of the advice does refer to that, but given that the overall delay for them was so lengthy, I'd be surprised if they weren't eligible to be compensated by the airline in some way?

Any advice from anyone either in the industry or who has experienced similar would be welcome.

Thanks!

The airline has taken them to their final destination within what they will consider ‘reasonable time’. They wouldn’t have been given seats on the Sunday flight as presumable that was fully booked. It sucks, but the airlines have to rebook you on the first available flight, which might or might not be the next day. As it’s summer it’s probably very difficult to find multiple seats on long haul flights with a few hours’ notice.

As they arrived at their destination more than X hours after the original time, under EU261 they would have been entitled to compensation, yes. But I believe a Doha to Perth flight (the one that counts for calculating this stuff) wouldn’t come under EU261.

In either case, a good insurance policy would compensate them somehow, for both the trip and luggage delays. Mine pays something like €100 per day for a travel delay, and up to €250 per day per passenger for lost luggage (or they refund receipts of whatever I have bought up to €350). Tell them to check their policies and claim on those, if the airline doesn’t offer anything else - which I doubt they will, because legally they’ve done their job.
