How do I go about proving I have Covid to claim on travel insurance?

Bloody hell. Started feel like a had a cold yesterday and did an LFT and it was negative. Still feeling ropey so tested again today and two red lines Sad

We're going to Centreparcs through the euro tunnel on Tuesday. We've got Covid cover on our insurance thankfully so should be covered but it says a positive test "must be verified by a medical practitioner'.

Has anyone done that? Obviously I can call the insurance company in the morning but would be good to know how much hassle this is.

Beginning to wish I hadn't bothered testing now!

Report to nhs online

HarryTheLass · 17/07/2022 16:46

I think you need a doctor's cert.

Yes how though? My GP isn't going to want me there and I very much doubt I can get an appointment before we're supposed to leave.

Honestly want to cry. This is our first holiday abroad for years

Get a PCR test done at one of the companies that have popped up for abroad travel? This might be your only chance of getting Covid verified

I'm surprised people aren't saying to go anyway.

DenholmElliot1 · 17/07/2022 16:55

It doesn't have to be a GP - it can be a nurse at the surgery.

As if GPs surgeries are not under enough pressure - now insurance companies are insisting they provide proof of covid - why can't they just accept a picture of the test results!

DenholmElliot1 · 17/07/2022 16:56

Or maybe if you ring and explain they will leave a note for you at reception. Ask anyway, this is why I hate insurance. You have to jump through so many hoops before they pay out it's deliberate, to make you give up.

Pay for a private test and get a certificate to show the insurance company

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 17/07/2022 17:07

There are only l8mited circumstances where you can get a free NHS test now - www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/get-tested-for-coronavirus/

If you are not eligible then you'll be a private one like the ones you get for travel.

I wasn't expecting to get it for free obviously. Just wasn't sure how to arrange a medical practitioner test.

Google a private provider like you'd use for a travel test

Of course. Sorry, being a bit dim. Will do that.

I would ring your insurance company first though - mine accepted a results email from submitting the results of a home test.

Because people are taking multiple tests when positive and then sharing/selling the images to people who want proof of a positive test. They all have individual numbers do people take 10 tests when they are positive, photo them and share them as and when people need them. Insurance companies do need proof that is able to withstand scrutiny

BungleandGeorge · 17/07/2022 18:32

I think you need to ring the insurance and verify what is acceptable. It’s always been the case that you’ve needed a medical letter to claim on insurance so that’s nothing new. I presume you haven’t got any nhs tests left?

SeasonFinale · 17/07/2022 18:34

The tests they send out that you do via zoom get a medical certificate for flying. They should be sufficient proof.

It's not deliberate to make you give up. It's to ensure fraudulent claims are caught before paying out. Otherwise premiums would be even higher for everyone

Thank you. This thread was just because I was wondering if anyone had been in the same boatbecause I don't know anyone who has. So that's very helpful!

I was worried they wouldn't so I rang them up as soon as I had a positive test in case I needed a PCR or something but they were v pragmatic - obviously not all insurers will be hence the need to check with yours specifically.

JustSmallFry · 18/07/2022 13:08

Get a PCR test.

It may come in useful to have the proof/recovery certificate if you need to travel in the next 3 months and need to do PCR test then - because you can still test positive for a long time afterwards
