I think you'll need to narrow it down to an area and say what you like to do on holiday. France is a big country. How will you travel? Any kids and what ages?

MeanwhileTime · 17/07/2022 14:41

We’re not set on any particular area but would prefer mid - southern France rather than further north. The Dordogne or Provence would be good. We’re a family of 4 (2 kids aged 11 and 9). We’ll have the car so don’t mind driving to places and I’d say as long as we’re within half an hours drive of a nice town with good places to eat.

I could recommend Gites de la Treille - It's in the Dordogne. I owned this place for 9 years and set it up from scratch. The French family we sold it to in 2012 are lovely and will I'm sure, make you very welcome should you book.

My neighbour's house is gorgeous. 20 minutes from Bordeaux, huge house, pool, trampoline, etc. Can find you a link if interested (and would make a break from rowdy 20somethings still in the pool at dawn 😉)

Oh thank you Sunset that place looks amazing and I have bookmarked it for future reference. We would ideally like a private pool rather than a shared one though, just so that the kids can splash around in it as much as they like without us having to worry about them spoiling anyone else’s enjoyment of it. I could definitely see us going there in a larger group of friends or family though!

Yes please, that sounds fabulous!

We stayed here a few years ago Maison Cruzy and it's lovely. Might be too big for just four though and possibly too far from a town.

JustSmallFry · 18/07/2022 13:05

Have you tried the Gites de France website: www.gites-de-france.com/en

You can add all sorts of filters to your search, including a private pool

I did see that they had a good selection but then saw the reviews on trust pilot and that put me off 😕

Really? They have been around for years and are highly reputable. We have used them for 40+ years

farnworth · 18/07/2022 13:41

I would also recommend Gite de France, and Pure France (which has loads of fab properties with private pool, and I have always found them really helpful).

Biffatcrafts · 18/07/2022 14:08

This place is lovely, run by someone I know, and the pool is really lovely! Apart from the gite, they also have a really lovely tent as well. It has a massive garden, and it's a great location for exploring from.

We stayed in an amazing place in the Dordogne but slept 9. The pool was incredible. Great if you want to go with friends or family.

It's very reasonable for what it is, pics don't do it justice.

dreamkitchenhelp · 18/07/2022 14:46

Following with interest. It would be nice to book direct with owner
Looking for next year for family holiday with grown up children and grandson.
Post your recommendations please!

What's your budget?

basilmint · 18/07/2022 19:02

Another regular user of Gîtes de France here. My Mum and Dad used to use them and we've booked several gîtes with them, never had any issues.

MeanwhileTime · 18/07/2022 19:28

Thank you all so much for your suggestions and recommendations, I will look at all of them. That’s really interesting about Gites de France, perhaps I need to revisit it. Have a look at trust pilot though and you’ll see what I mean.

The problem these days is that if you’re not careful and you just do a search for gites de France, you end up on all sorts of other sites before the legitimate one - which is why I gave the link. The site gives reviews for each gite, so if you find one you think you like, give ttem a read and see what others thought

That’s really useful, thank you. I will do that.

I have a gîte booked with gîtes de France in a couple of weeks so will report back if it's terrible! They can be on the "rustic" side but that's usually what you get with a gîte. They're old converted farm buildings usually.

weaselish · 18/07/2022 21:16

My friend runs (and lives) in these two gites. They are stunning and yes I'm biased but she's a great host too!

we've booked several times via theluberon.com
you can filter the houses so you get exactly what you want. always have had good experiences.

itrytomakemyway · 19/07/2022 07:15

Gites de France can be a bit hit and miss. We have had some lovely properties with them, and a couple of very 'rustic' places. They are cheaper than other companies though. I would ignore their rating system - it gives higher rating for very odd facilities! Use the pictures as a better guide. It also helps if you speak decent French - many of the owners we have booed with have little English.

There used to be a lot more choice, but now a lot of the rental companies have been bought up by the same firm. Holidaylettings has some nice places, ownersdirect used to be very good - I think they are homeaway/ vrbo now.

We have hired dozens of places in France over the years and I would say 9/10 times we have have fantastic places and saved a small fortune by not going through the package holiday route. Even the places that were more miss than hit were not too bad. Having a pool of our own was brilliant - it is a great way to holiday with children.
