Canada, kids and masks

We are travelling to Canada in 3 weeks time (Vancouver and rockies). Me, DH and DS (14) all fully vaccinated. DD (11) has had one jab and was due her second jab this weekend. On Monday she tested positive for COVID (lft) - very mild symptoms. Guidance is that she therefore should not have her second COVID for another 12 weeks after a confirmed infection (query if LFT is ‘confirmed’ or if that means PCR??)

Have just realised that without the second jab and no PCR confirmed COVID infection, she is considered partially vaccinated. This will not affect her being able to enter Canada, but the guidance says she must wear a mask at all times in public places. This will not make for a pleasant holiday for her.

Wanted to ask any Canadians on here if any partially or unvaccinated kids in Canada have to wear masks - or is it just international arrivals? How likely is it we will be asked for proof of her vaccination and she will be told to mask up once she is actually in the country??

Trying to weigh up the risks of getting her second jab tomorrow (despite recent COVID infection) so she is fully vaccinated; against taking her partially vaccinated.

Hi, i’m not sure what the requirements are for entering the country right now in terms of vaccine status.
But we have children the same age and live in Vancouver, and your daughter will not be asked for vaccine status when she enters a restaurant, goes into public places, tourist attractions, etc.
having said that, you may notice that Canadians wear masks these days far more than they do in the UK! We are visiting the UK right now and have been shocked at the lack of masks on crowded tube trains, buses, etc.
Feel free to ask me any other questions about your trip

Thanks - that is really helpful. She will definitely be allowed in the country it’s just that it says she needs to wear a mask in all public places as she is only partially vaccinated (well actually, she is technically fully vaccinated but we can’t prove it without an NHS PCR which we can’t get). .

But you are right - I am probably approaching that from a UK point of view where we have become lax with mask wearing to say the least. Will feel better if masks are generally the done thing, as it’ll make it more likely we’ll actually get through the holiday without getting covid (dd is still the only one of us to get it and was so mild - she had 1 instance of raised temp which is when we tested her. That dropped to normal within an hour and then no other symptoms). Typically the earliest she could have had her second jab is the day before she tested positive so we just seem to have been really unlucky with being able to prove her status.

I’m still far from convinced we’ll make it on the plane without one of the rest of us picking it up before we go, but fingers crossed it’ll be third time lucky (postponed from 2020 and then 2021!)

Canada are bringing back random testing for international travellers from next week ( at off site locations!) so fingers crossed none of your get it now before you travel as I don’t believe you can get Covid recovery certificates anymore? I try not to follow the news too much but am aware we can no longer get pcr tests. . It’s all so ridiculous !! I’m due to travel on my own in September to see my sister and am already panicking enough as it is ☹️

You can get a private pcr test and then get a certificate of recovery that way.

There are not really any risks getting her vaccinated though, the reason they say 12 weeks is as you will have immunity for at least that time so a vaccine is unnecessary for that period. We had our child vaccinated 2 weeks after having covid. No side effects at all.

Just to say the USA don't deem you as fully vaccinated until 14 days after your 2nd vaccination. I know you're going to Canada but don't know if the same rules apply then. Also when my son went the centre were adamant you couldn't have the vaccine for 12 weeks after the last positive test. I guess you'd have to lie.

Canada and the US are different countries.

Just saying
