Holidaying with a broken arm (child)

We’re due to be going to Mallorca towards the end of the month, staying for 8 nights. DD2 (5) unfortunately broke her arm this week. It was a nasty break and we spent 24 hours in hospital, with successful manipulation under anaesthetic. They managed to stabilise it without metal work.

Both the Consultant and Registrar were confident we’d still be going on holiday. They are going to push her fracture clinic appointment back by a couple of days (8/9 instead of the usual 7) to improve the chances she can have her current full arm plaster cast replaced with a fibreglass cast that comes to below her elbow. She’ll have had this for more than 48 hours before we fly, so that’s fine.

The consultant mentioned in passing that he would be “more comfortable with it getting wet” if she didn’t need metalwork. I’m not sure whether a waterproof cast is going to be possible (friends have had them from the same hospital), but for now, I’m assuming no swimming.

I’ve order a LimbO for bathing/showering and also a more heavy duty dry pro cast which is supposedly 100% waterproof and suitable for swimming, but I absolutely will not be allowing her to swim if the medical team advise against it. I’m hoping carefully supervised paddling and sitting in shallow water might be possible, as an equivalent to bathing. We have a semi-private pool (shared between 4 rooms) so I’m hopeful we’ll find times to use it when we’ll be alone.

Any thoughts on anything we should take with us, or prepare for, or anything fun we can do that is non-water related? We’ve been to the aquarium before and also driven through the mountains to some very pretty coves and lovely restaurants, so we’ll be doing both of those. We have a hire care booked.

We have existing insurance that will cover us for cancellation if necessary, but won’t cover us for if something should happen with her arm while we’re away (it’s linked to our home insurance and they won’t cover pre-existing issues), so I’m shopping around for that. £114 is the first quote I’ve got from Insure and Go. Expensive, but worth it. If anyone knows of any good companies in this regard, I’d also be pleased to hear recommendations.

Thank you!

Anybody?

Turns out our travel insurance would cover us if anything happened abroad (provided we’re not acting against medical advice). It wouldn’t count as “pre-existing” as the holiday was booked and insurance re-newed well before the arm break. So that’s good news 😊

@MelvinThePenguin just curious about how you got on with the DryPro?

My DD (2.5) just broke her leg and is in a cast - we are going to be speaking to her doctor on Monday about swimming (or even just using the paddling pool). It would be amazing if she could do something in the water while she's not able to walk, particularly given the heat at the moment.

Hi @SerendipityJumper. Sorry to hear about your DD

We ended up buying both a Dry Pro and Bloccs cover. DD found the Dry Pro too tight when the air was sucked out, but got on well with the Bloccs, which doesn’t have a vacuum pump.

She couldn’t have a waterproof cast fitted before our holiday in the end, so she wore the Bloccs cover in the pool and the sea, with no issue. We had bought her a rubber ring to bob around in and avoid submersion as much as possible, but being 5, there were times she went completely under water and we had no leaks at all.

The Bloccs cover had a small hole in it after about 9 days of use, so we had to throw it away at that point. Fortunately, we were leaving for home anyway.

I hope your DD gets to have some fun in the water soon :-)
