Cheap holiday abroad

Cantwaitfortheweekend · 15/07/2022 14:22

DF has recently become ill and expected life expectancy of a few years.
DF & DM don’t have much money as DF had to give up work and DM become his carer.
He love to go on one last holiday abroad but can’t afford it so me and DH want to treat them but can’t afford a lot. Where is nice on a budget (we can go outside school hols)?
Don’t want anyone too rough/chavvy as want DF to enjoy his last holiday abroad.

That's a lovely thing to do for your parents, @Cantwaitfortheweekend.

I was just wondering if you'd had a look at travel insurance, as it can be really expensive when one of the travellers is terminally ill, so probably needs to be factored into your budget.

In terms of destination, are there any restrictions in terms of length of flight etc.?

Annual travel insurance is already in place for DF with his illness added. Expires next June.
Preferably 3 hour flight max.

I’d look at a cruise, I’ve just booked azura round the canaries for £2k including £400 on board spend. That wax with a balcony.

inside cabins were around £600 for 7 nights.

RedPandaFluff · 18/07/2022 17:57

I love the Algarve and it's about a three-hour flight; how about one of the smaller towns near Albufeira? They could go on lovely boat trips around the caves . . . I've been three times now and I've always found it to be a really relaxing, peaceful, beautiful place.

Georgyporky · 18/07/2022 18:13

Unless it's already covered, adding a sea cruise to travel insurance will be extremely expensive.

How about a European river cruise? Never met a lager lout on one!
Short flight or Eurotunnel to starting point.
Easy, relaxed travelling. Dozens of different routes & prices - check whether price includes travel from UK.
Price will include full board, so take that into account. Excursions are usually included, but getting off the boat & strolling around costs nothing.

Menorca.

There’s lots of places you can hire mobility aids from, too, if necessary.

TheCanyon · 18/07/2022 18:26

I'm going to on you

We’ve been looking at budget holidays and there’s a lovely site in Tenerife called Gf Isabel that has little villas round a pool just a short walk from a beach etc. Jet2 and Tui both go there, you can google and have a look. Really good reviews and if you go outside of school time apparently it’s very quiet and quite cheap - and being the canaries the weather is lovely year round.

Jalisco · 18/07/2022 19:00

Slight aside, but there are a lot of charities that subsidise holidays in the circumstances. It is worth looking around for possibilities. You'd pay for yourself, but be there as support / friends. That could make it more affordable and allow you to look at the holiday of a lifetime. You don't have to go too far too also have something that creates great memories.

anybloodyname · 18/07/2022 19:14

Jet 2 could find you a 3* all inclusive somewhere like Canaries for around £450 each

You can specify you want something flat and quiet - relaxing rather than rowdy

Hope they enjoy their holiday 💐

Happydays321 · 18/07/2022 19:22

Ba holiday finder has some good deals, plus you can order by tripadvisor ratings.

Cantwaitfortheweekend · 18/07/2022 21:38

Thanks everyone. I’ve grabbed some brochures for Portugal, Canaries & Spain so will see what we all decide upon!

Thanks for letting me know, I’ll look into it but given his age and how long he’s been poorly, doubt we will get any help.

Don’t rely purely on brochures, most holidays are done online now and a lot of times won’t appear in the brochures.

Have a look on easyJet holidays, jet 2 & tui, you can sort by price and look under special deals etc.

imagakster · 19/07/2022 07:03

down load the holiday pirates app.
they have some really great holidays on there
at really good prices
also i second jet 2 and i think if you spoke to them they'd be really helpful

Thighdentitycrisis · 19/07/2022 07:06

Madeira

Louise0701 · 19/07/2022 07:10

Brochures? Didn’t know they still did them. You get better offers online.

I would recommend Italy but hard to say without knowing where they’ve been before, where they’ve enjoyed, what they like etc

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2022 07:34

Is there anywhere in particular he'd like to go, either because he's not been yet or somewhere he's been before but would like to return?

Also, where are you in the country. Places like the Canaries and Madeira probably meet your 3 hour flight time criteria if you're in the SE but not in Scotland.

What sort of things does he like and does he have mobility issues? A lot of these places are quite hilly.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2022 07:36

You might get good deals online but there are still independent high street travel agents that work with Jet2holidays, Tui etc and will have their own offers and knowledge about the sort of place that might suit the OP.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 19/07/2022 07:45

Do you want a hotel or self catering type accommodation? Villa, apartment?

What type of things do you want to do? Sightseeing, culture, swimming pool…

Where have they enjoyed before?

A few more details would help us to make some suitable suggestions.

Cantwaitfortheweekend · 23/07/2022 10:34

Thanks for your suggestions. We’ve booked Tenerife half board in May for us all.

I only got the brochures to show parents the places. I booked online as it’s always cheaper 😁
