Cabin/hand luggage suitcase help please..

22 replies

bizzey · 06/07/2022 21:43

Going for 5 day city break.
Hand luggage only.
I bought a pull along small suitcase that fits the sizes...but...

The pull up handle takes up alot of space inside the suitcase.

Material is very thin,and sticks up halfway through the inside of the suitcase

Does anyone has any good ideas for a small pull along suitcase,that I don't have to compromise on the interior ?
Thanks

I think what I want is a flat base ?

I bought this one. DH used it for 5 nights away - but we do travel light!

Cabin Max Greenwich 30L Hybrid... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09KHGYLTS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Thank you .
I will check that out.

I also recommend Cabinmax.

I was very happy with the cases I bought in Primark - £35.

Jewelanemone · 06/07/2022 22:10

Roll your clothes rather than fold/lay flat. You'll get loads more in, and the clothes won't be as creased. Trust me, it works. Did this for a trip to Paris with two outfits and shoes per day.

TizerorFizz · 07/07/2022 04:36

Clothes take up the same volume flat or rolled. Make sure you check the dimensions for cabin bags stipulated by the airline. They can differ. What size of handbag can you take?

Also, everyone will have carry on luggage. If you can pay to board early, do it. Later passengers can find all overhead stowage is taken.

Decent makes include Antler, Delsy, Samsonite, etc. Look at rigid cases if size permits. Cheap cases do what you have found. It’s a challenge doing no hold luggage.

notimagain · 07/07/2022 08:56

@bizzey

*The pull up handle takes up a lot of space inside the suitcase".

Stating the obvious but the handle and assorted mechanism has to go somewhere and of course the whole assembly has to fit within the (sometimes stingey) dimensions specified by the airline.

One of the questionable joys of spending a lot of time in airports over the years was sometimes seeing people smashing the external fittings such as handles and wheels off their carry on bags in an effort to get them into the gauging box........

@TizerorFizz

I know rolling has become fashionable and I accept it may help stop creasing but I've never understood the volume argument...FWIW when packing I used to roll some stuff to fit between any parts of the handle assembly that did intrude on the interior of the roll on, most of the rest (shirts, jackets) went in flat..

It's often a case of knowing what works for your bag, and mixing technique.

TizerorFizz · 07/07/2022 12:27

I put underwear in the recessed spaces either side of the handle. Just folded!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply.

Going with BA ,who have a very generous luggage allowance.

Bought the soft cabin case as opposed to hard as I read on another thread they are more likely not to put it in hold ,if flight is busy ?

Not sure about the last bit TBH, depends a bit on the airport.

I flew with BA a lot over the years, at some places the gate staff have utime to have a look at who has what in the way of baggage around the gate area before boarding starts and can therefore be a bit selective about what gets tagged for the hold (if anything needs to go there).

At other places if on boarding it looks like the overhead stowages are going to be overflowing the either the ground staff take any style roll on type bags off the last X passengers to board and send them to be hold loaded.

Good Luck, have a good time.

TizerorFizz · 07/07/2022 20:39

I did experience bags being put in the hold by BA staff. I was chosen! Nowhere near last at the gate either. They chose “soft” targets - obviously not business people! The bags were put to one side for tagging. However my DD wasn’t chosen (neither of us have hard cases) and I managed to escape with DD and freed my case while they were distracted and we rushed out of sight to board! I didn’t feel guilty as I had just a medium handbag as well as the carry on suitcase. Others had back packs/second large bag/computer bag and they were not stopped. It wasn’t based on number or size of bags or type of bag.

However DD 2 was nearly denied access to a flight by EasyJet because her handbag was too big! I spoke to the woman at Palma airport (from the uk) as DD was only 18 at the time. They let her on. DD said loads had boarded ahead of her with all sorts of large lumpy bags.

So don’t worry too much about case being taken to the hold. However there will be a scrum for overhead lockers. You need elbows to get to the front of your boarding queue!

TizerorFizz · 07/07/2022 20:41

Oh yes. I forgot to add: EasyJet wanted money from DD2 to put the bag in the hold. It was suitable on the way out and therefore suitable on the way back. Yes, she was nearer the end of the queue!

For cabin baggage go for two wheels rather than four
Four wheels reduce space in the interior and your case won't be heavy enough to warrant four wheels anyway. I think most two wheeled Samsonite cases are good, soft sided more flexible than hard. Cheaper versions don't last well in my experience.

Just annoy everyone else in the terminal as they trip over your bag.

notimagain · 07/07/2022 21:58

Must admit you've lost me with that one, why would a two wheeled cabin bag (like the one I've got parked upright across from me in my room right now) be any trippier 🤔 than a 4 wheeler?

Mind you, if we are moving onto discussing trip hazards don't start me on *Trunkies.🤐

TizerorFizz · 07/07/2022 22:04

@notimagain
Because they are more likely to fall over? If you get a decent one, they don’t but people hang all sorts of things off them. Trunkies - ban them!

Ah OK, yep I get it and yes they can need a bit of TLC....

Downside with some of the 4 wheelers that use castors is they increase the case dimensions with no gain from a volume POV.

You may recall upthread I mentioned seeing people trying to bash bits off cases to get them in the gauging box - last instance I witnessed was somebody smashing his case on the floor ground, hard, adjacent to the gate and Easyjet gate staff at a non UK airport, trying to knock the castors off his wheelie after the team rejected the thing as carry on after it didn't fit into the dreaded box....

It all ended up looking a bit like Basil Fawlty thrashing his car ("I'll give you a damn good thrashing") but the problem was bits of plastic ended up flying everywhere and the police got called....

Sadly we were boarding from an adjacent gate and didn't witness the final outcome........

TizerorFizz · 07/07/2022 23:56

@notimagain
Had total hysterics when that episode from Fawlty Towers was first shown. On another topic, but that was a golden age of comedy.

Yes. The wheels on the 4 wheel cases can be quite big. I’ve not flown EasyJet or Ryanair after DD had the debacle about her handbag with them. BA might cost more but overall less hassle.

I have been travelling with two wheeled cabin baggage for thirty years and can't recall a time that anyone has ever tripped over it. Do you mean because you pull it behind you as opposed to push it in front of you? I think there are plenty of other hazards at the airport. Massive trolleys of outsize bags that the driver can't see round......

The It World's lightest cases do this. Loads of room inside. We've got one that's around 15 years old and still going strong, despite going in the hold a couple of times.

You can also get them from Matalan, direct from It, and possibly other places, so have a google.

BarbaraofSeville...it was out of stock in Argos ....but I found it in Wilko's !

I am massively overthinking my luggage situation .
But luckily ..my adult DS,'s are very minimalist....so we can share bags and stuff.
