Day trip to Athens with moany pre-teens?

In a few weeks we are going to Greece for six days with our DCs 12, 9 and 8. We have booked a villa on the coast about two hours from Athens and we all can’t wait to relax and enjoy the sun after a hectic year. We are now debating whether to spend a day seeing the sights in Athens. Unfortunately it won’t work out to do it on the first or last day so we will have to do a midweek day trip. DH and to some extent my middle son enjoy history but as a family we tend to enjoy active/exploring or beachy holidays rather than museums and guided tours. We hate crowds and queues. My DCs are generally curious types but they do not early mornings, long drives, heat, crowds and queues. I will admit the thought of using a precious day of our holiday to traipse around crowded ruins in 33-degree weather with three moaning kids makes me want to cry. But of course Athens has enormous cultural/historical significance and I feel guilty at the thought of missing it. If it is something the kids are likely to enjoy or in some way benefit from I am fully capable of putting on a happy face and doing my best to keep them interested. Can anyone who has done a day trip to Athens shed some light on whether it is likely to be worth it? I can honestly say that I got nothing out of the many many stately homes and museums and old churches I was dragged to as a child and in fact I hated every second of it. I’m not even sure my parents enjoyed it but they felt like they “should” do it. Does Athens fall into that category? Any recommendations of how to make it bearable enjoyable with moany preteens?

I loved Athens but (very long time ago I was a teen!) it was very hot, dusty and dirty then. It's been 30 years so may be better now

At this time of year it will be hot and lots of crowds and queues

Gosh I would avoid given your preferences. The only way to do it would be to go early morning as it gets so hot and busy. I went to the acropolis in august and nearly collapsed with the heat. It's very exposed.

It is a magical place but I wouldn't expect my DD to enjoy it.

I've not been on holiday to Greece but have been to Athens many times for work. Personally I would not drag my teens to Athens in the summer - very hot and dusty. I'd stay by the sea.

We loved Athens. The city itself is beautiful, the ruins and the way the new city is built on the old city is striking

i loved the markets and enjoyed the food immensely.

if 2 of the family will enjoy it and the rest will enjoy a beach day then why not follow interests?

if you go in the middle of the day it will definitely be hot and crowded. Would you be able to book an Airbnb or hotel for one night? We took 2 young teens a few years ago and stayed v close to the acropolis. We set an alarm so that we could get up early and watch the sun rise over it, then went for breakfast, and made sure we were amongst the first ones in when it opened. By the time we'd been round it it was really filling up, but we saw most of it without the big crowds. Then I think we went back for a nap, and then spend the rest of day seeing other sights in the city, finishing with sunset from the other side. I think the sunrise / sunset thing was a good hook for them, and we had a really great day - but if you have to build a two hour drive to get there into the morning you really will hit the crowds. Ours were very into Percy Jackson at the time, so they liked the history of Greece.
