Chamonix in Summer - good holiday?

Hello,
we're considering a change of pace this year and doing an alps holiday rather than the beach. We're quite an active family so thought it might be fun. Has anyone been in summer? Are there a lot of things to do? Any hints most welcome
thanks!

If you're outdoorsy and love being active, yes.

If not, probably not.

I would stay in Argentiere or Les Praz rather than Cham itself, as central Cham can be a bit of a party town.

Things to do:

Lots of walking, walks to alpine huts etc. It's all very hilly so be prepared for steepness.

Trip up the Aiguille de Midi. I've only even done it as a way to access climbing, but it's a popular tourist day out in its own right.

Montenvers train - this takes you to the start of some nice higher walks on the MB side of the valley, and you can go down to the glacier (what's left of it).

Yes.

We went loads as kids. Not at all outdoorsy but from the fens so the change of scene was quite dramatic for us.

We'd usually stay in sameons but we stayed in chamonix at least once.

We loved going to various 'grottoes' and le mer de glacé was great.

A few years ago DH and I went in the summer and went up Mont Blanc.

I seem to remember doing summer luge runs in la cluzas and chamonix.

Amazing holidays in the alps as a kid.

Yes great for walking/hiking and other summer mountain sports. It doesn’t get much more stunning than Mont Blanc and the surrounding peaks. But as a pp said, if you’re not into all that then maybe not the best place.

Haven't been for ages but I should imagine the town centre is still ridiculously expensive for things like a beer or lunch but you could say that about much of the alps.

I’ve been to Morzine a few times in the summer and that may be better for a wider spread of things to do as well as summer alpine stuff. Probably a bit cheaper too.

We went for a week when dc were small. Plenty to keep busy and a lively alpine town. Easy access to other smaller resorts and Geneva for a day trip.
