Munich/Bavaria Trip

I posted a while back about Germany trip to Munich and surrounding areas. I'd initially booked flights in to Munich and leaving from Frankfurt but after chats to friend from Munich and some research switched return flight to Munich as so much to see near there.

Have now booked for Munich, Tutzing beside Lake Starnberg and last few days in Berchtesgaden area. Really excited now and looking forward to a little adventure.

There is €9 public transport monthly ticket, you can use on any non express trains/buses. Special summer offer by government. So that is super!

If anyone had been to any of these areas and has any must sees or tips do let me know.

I'll definitely take boat trip on königssee, salt mine (and eagles nest if time permits).

I'm also attempting to travel light which I'm really bad at but as I'm solo and using a lot of public transport trying to limit amount of luggage.

If anyone has used laundrette in Munich are they self service style or drop off/collect. If I could do a wash after first 4 days would be good to save on amount of clothes I pack

The train from Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) to Salzburg is around 2 hours. Totally worth a day trip.
Visiting the site of the concentration camp at Dachau is a bit grizzly, I still urge you to visit. It’s really moving and one of the few places I’ve been which I’d say has actually changed my life. Take the S2 train direction Dachau / Petershausen then the bus 726 from Dachau station to the memorial site.

It’s been 20 years since I visited Munich, so do double check my advice, but…

Salzburg is very close to Berchtesgaden. If you were planning a visit, I’d go on your last day there (maybe on the bus). You can then get the train back from Salzburg directly to Munich, rather than having to change at Freilassing.

I have used a laundrette and it was definitely coin operated. But can’t remember the name or location now.

Kloster Andechs is a good place to visit when you are in the southern lakes region - a monastery that brews beer. Quite close to Tutzing.

Within the city, the two art galleries are very good - Pinakothek Alte/Moderne. In the university area and it’s nice for a walk around there. I also recommend Schloss Nymphenburg.

The market near Marienplatz is worth a look (can’t remember the name).

Castle of mad king Ludwig is close enough for a day trip I think.
If you're adventurous I'd spend a day in the foot hills of the alps.
If you're into history it's where hans and Sophie schol are from. (I can't spell)
See if there's anything on in olimpiapark while you're there.
The English garden is a nice park if you fancy a rest day.
Go to a proper beer garden.

I think pp might have named the castle.
Oh and there's a church/steeple/tower opposite marienplatz with a really good view from the top, Peter something maybe?

Agree about Dachau and Kloster Andechs. If you like spas and saunas there are several, the largest being Therme Erding.
