Christmas solo holiday

I'm seriously thinking of booking a holiday over Christmas this year. I'm single, my DS is 21 and has his own life and although family and friends are lovely and welcoming, I just fancy trying a solo Christmas holiday.

I'm currently green eyed at a Facebook friend on a solo holiday in Italy having the time of her life. I travelled to California for a solo holiday in Feb 2020 so I'm not worried about travelling on my own.

Haven't got a huge budget (nearly fainted looking at Tui Florida prices) so that will limit me. I had a fancy for a cruise as I thought that would have plenty to do, but I think they're too spendy.

Any suggestions welcome 😊

Prices might be cheaper if you book your flight and hotel separately and directly, not through an agent. New York is magical at Christmas.

A lot of places will be pricey at Xmas time! I think I would rather do a swanky Hotel dinner in UK unless your wanting hit weather!

Hong Kong is a great place to spend Christmas (I used to live there). It's festive but everything is open and the weather is still good enough to be outside (it was 25 degrees on my last Christmas Day there). Flights are cheap at the moment because of Covid restrictions - non-residents are allowed in now but you have to quarantine. I'd suggest keeping an eye on restrictions because if you book as soon as they lift the quarantine requirement, you can probably get a really good deal on flights and hotels. But prices will rise quickly so you'll need to be tracking restrictions on a daily basis and be ready to book asap.

I'm now looking at cruises....I think if I'm solo then there would be loads to do if I chose to, and if I wanted some alone time I can do that too.

Haven't ruled out looking at booking a flight and a hotel separately to somewhere like NY though...

Lots of airbnb places available in NYC around Christmas time, as people travel out of the city to visit family. Just get out before New Year’s as that’s when prices and crowds are crazy.

I think a cruise is a great idea as a solo traveller, as you say you could be as sociable as you feel like, there is lots to do if you want to and it is safe. I am happy with my own company but not sure I would want to do a solo city trip at Christmas as there will be days with lots of things closed. Obviously a resort "flop and drop" holiday somewhere warm would also be nice.

I sometimes go to London. Or an an activity holiday, like HF Holidays?

Have you priced up a cruise, it could be worth talking to a cruise consultant who would be able to advise you on the best company for avoiding paying solo cabin supplement?
what is your approximate budget?

newusernamelouise · 29/06/2022 18:12

Ive been on Christmas cruises with my family and there always seems to be a lot of single people on board. I've looked at them having a good time, company if you want it, not if you don't, and thought to myself it's a great idea if I ever find myself single. Especially at Christmas when single people can sometimes feel left out of things.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/06/2022 18:15

I did a solo Christmas trip to Amsterdam a few years back. Went on boxing day for 4 nights. Lovely

Lots of really good suggestions here, thank you!
In terms of budget, I hadn't decided exactly what to do (& I don't know what a 'reasonable' holiday price would be, post covid) so 🤷🏻‍♀️
One cruise I found works out at about £1700 for 7 nights, including return flights to Tenerife and £30 spending money per day. So I guess that's now my benchmark.
Incidentally, it would only cost about another £400 for two of us to travel!!!

I feel I am edging towards a cruise - seems like a good option for a single person.

Where might I find a cruise consultant? Do I just Google them?

Sorry for the cruise newbie question Smile

I cruise solo quite a lot and Christmas is a lovely time to travel. Solo cruises can be quite spendy due to single supplements so I’d suggest a solo cruise specialist. There’s a travel agent called ‘passion for cruises’ who offer some really good solo deals, give them a call and see what’s on offer or check out their fb page.

I’ve also done solo escorted holidays at Christmas - if that’s your kind of thing then I can recommend Just You holidays.

Whatever you do, have a wonderful time!

OompaLoompaa · 30/06/2022 21:56

I use Iglu cruise, I find them very knowledgeable.

Decorhate · 30/06/2022 22:07

I’ve always thought Rome would be nice for a solo Christmas. And probably less busy that the summer.

Roja9 · 30/06/2022 22:11

You could go further to Bali or Thailand with that budget.

There'll be lights and decorations but everything will be open, with lots to do.

chimichangaz · 30/06/2022 22:13

Thanks for the recommendations @OompaLoompaa @Jellifer @Decorhate

My friend mentioned iglu and I'll have a look at the other suggestions Flowers
