Ryanair 'small personal bag'

Sorting bags for summer holiday with Ryanair. Been years since I’ve used them and I don’t recall this being an issue last time.

We’ve got 1 x 20kg case and a ‘small personal bag’ each which must be no bigger than 40cm x 20cm x 25cm

Just got out all the rucksacks and bags we have and none are that small. We don’t need tons of stuff but there is a fair bit of electronics for us all and ‘safe’ food for autistic ds to eat on travel day plus paperwork and water bottles etc.

But really, I don’t want to buy 3 new small rucksacks (which I can’t even really find that easily - everything looks bigger!)

Anything I’m missing here - what do people use?

Pay for a 10kg hand luggage bag on top

Pay for a 10kg hand luggage bag on top

This has to go in the hold (according to our app which tells us what we can add on to our booking) and we need the electronics and food during the flight.

I just take a rucksack as long as it can squash to that size you’ll be fine. I have taken just a cotton tote before too. So long as it fits under the seat in front of you you’ll be fine.
I’ve just returned from holiday with Ryanair, I only took the small personal bag with everything I need for the week, and it was absolutely packed. People take all sorts.

I took a handbag last time I went on a Ryanair flight; this summer I’m planning to take a handbag and a small childrens rucksack for DC

BippityBobbityBoo · 25/06/2022 16:42

I also had an across body handbag and an old duty free carrier bag with my sarnies in!

Natsku · 25/06/2022 16:42

You have to pay for priority boarding and hand luggage together, that way you get to take a normal size hand luggage in.

GrandSlamFinalee · 25/06/2022 16:43

Just take your rucksacks. Unless they’re all full to the brim and you see them going over your heads they won’t take them off you. I fly Ryanair dozens of times a year and never have I seen them measure backpacks. Sometimes they’ll check the little suitcases but you’re ok to go with any backpack. Especially if flying from one of the major airports - at London Stansted they’ve even got rid of the measure boxes. Ground staff also don’t have the time to check everybody’s rucksack.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 25/06/2022 16:46

Flying with Ryanair yesterday they were making everyone stuff their bags into the box to prove it would fit.

coldfeetwarming · 25/06/2022 16:49

Conflicting info!!!! I thought this might be the case. You might get lucky, you might not. Balls.

We booked the 'plus' package - so seat selection, case and hand luggage. There's no 'bigger' hand luggage option that I can see. It's just only now I've realised the size of the hand luggage is smaller than I was anticipating (it's not handbag size, just not standard rucksack size)

We've booked that same package and our rucksacks aren't super small. We don't fill them so they always squash under the seat in front with no issues.

Just double checked my booking - its the "add priority and 2 cabin bags" add on you need to get a normal size one plus the handbag size one.

The bag has to fit in their box thing at the airport. It does mean if your rucksack isn't exactly the dimensions they specify, you will get away with it because its soft and it can be squished into the space. The problem is with hardcase bags because you can't get them in the overhead lockers.

I think generally speaking you can get away with a cm or two in different directions for a rucksack even with RyanAir for this reason. The main point is you can fit it into their test box.

Just don't take the piss and have a rucksack that significantly bigger than their specifications.

hellcatspangle · 25/06/2022 17:17

As long as you can squash your rucksack into the 40cm x 20cm thing it's fine, just don't fill it. I use my large handbag and DH uses a soft sided cross body bag that will squash into the measurements required.

You could buy a couple of cheap canvas tote bags off eBay?

letsplanaholiday · 25/06/2022 17:21

I bout these from Amazon... travelled a couple of times on Ryanair over last few months and they are literally the perfect size . Really pleased with them.

We flew recently with easyJet. You are allowed a bag of airport shopping in addition to whatever hand luggage allowance you have. Not sure if this applies to Ryanair. But if your bags are super stuffed, you could add some of the contents to your airport shopping bags. annoyingly I couldn't find the answer to whether or not an airport shopping bag can be a reusable bag that I bring with me or if it has to be a branded single use bag.

Janek · 26/06/2022 09:21

IME the bag needs to be those dimensions OR can fit under the seat in front of you or words to that effect. The old Ryanair size hand luggage fitted under the seat in front of you! So as long as you don't take the piss with the size and don't try and put it in a locker, you'll be fine.

My dds have rucksacks that they've always used and always put under the seat. These are now 'too deep', but they still fit like they always did and no one has said anything yet.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 26/06/2022 12:24

I think once it fits under the seat it's fine. They will ask you to take it down from overhead lockers because they're only for wheels bags now.

jocktamsonsbairn · 26/06/2022 23:00

As others have said, as long as you can squish them down you'll be fine. Once through security buy water etc in Boots/WHSmith etc - best doing anyway as lots of short haul flights seem to be flying with no food and drink on board due to supply shortages, then pop your own food in the bag too. No one seems to care about stuff you've bought in airport.
