Travel insurance that covers this flight cancellation chaos?

Hello, I'm mainly asking about insurance that will cover any lost accommodation costs (booked separately) as I know/hope the airline would sort out any flight delays. I have called Staysure, LV and Coverwise and they've all said no, it's a known risk, so they can't cover it. Anyone had any luck with any other insurers who have confirmed they would cover this?

No luck. We lost a lot of money in 2020, & don't want to get caught out again.

Reluctantly, we now only book flight+hotel with the same company so we are covered by the "package " rules.

Sorry to hear that! I'm hoping to hop around a few places so I don't think a package holiday would suit me sadly.

I have a single trip policy with Tesco (underwritten by AXA) and called to ask if I would be able to claim my hotel costs if EasyJet cancel my flight (booked separately) and was told that yes this would be covered(up to £1,000 with my Bronze (basic) level cover). Policy cost me about £5.

I think you’ll struggle to take out a policy now which covers this. Insurance is for unknown events, as you’ve been told this is now a known event. This is why you should take insurance out as soon as you book a trip.

I'd hope the OP gets cover, but I wonder if the premiums have gone up recently..interesting to hear how the OP gets on.

I'm not sure the insuring against cancellations has suddenly become impossible simply because they are supposedly a known event.

In reality cancellations are a possible event just like getting sick and needing medical treatment on holiday, losing your luggage, losing your passport. Happens all the time to a greater or lesser degree to travellers and they can insure against those, at a price.

Despite the press coverage delays are not inevitable, the reality is plenty of people are travelling OK.

I realise I didn't make it very clear, but we've booked tailor-made packages via travel agents.
e.g. a recent trip involved 5 flights, 3 locations, & all transfers.
If any part of the trip was cancelled, we would have got a full refund because it was a package deal from one company.

notimagain · 25/06/2022 12:01

We've tended to self organise flights/accommodation over the years and there certainly are (or at least were) companies in the UK who will ensure individuals/families for a whole trip, possibly multi centre, effectively treating it if it was a package for the purposes of protection.

Last time out I think we used ?? Worldwide/ ?? Worldwide Insure...

Hi everyone, just thought I'd give a little update. I called Tesco who said they could provide cover and then after I called them up a second time to check something then said they wouldn't be able to.

Churchill and the Post Office both said yes although the PO sounded like they were very much reading from the policy document and didn't really have a clue otherwise. When I mentioned to both about other insurers saying they couldn't cover due to known risk, they said as long as your flight hasn't been cancelled and then you're trying to get insurance, that's fine.

In the end, I went for Coverforyou - woman on the phone sounded super knowledgeable about why I'd want that kind of cover (whereas the others sounded as if it was the first time they'd been asked about it which was odd). Make sure to take out their extra travel disruption add on. Was told you're covered for lost accommodation costs if your flight is delayed over 12 hours.

Also in my deep dive into what you can claim back in this situation, the airline apparently is required to get you to your destination that same day even if it's by getting you on a flight by a different airline. And if you book your flight on your credit card, you can try to claim it back from your bank if anything happens.

Also if your rescheduled flight is over 2 hours later from your original one, you can claim back compensation. £220 for short haul flights per person: www.caa.co.uk/passengers/resolving-travel-problems/delays-and-cancellations/cancellations/

And if your flight back is cancelled, you should be able to claim back reasonable accommodation costs back from the airline (make sure to get receipts as they don't accept card statements!).

Now I definitely need a holiday to get over the stress of trying to find travel insurance! Safe travels to you all!
