Drinking water abroad / ice in drinks etc

I’ve read that you shouldn’t drink tap water in most countries abroad - I’m thinking Spain / Turkey etc. But then I see photos of people on holiday with ice in their drinks / drinking slushies etc. Do people not get unwell from doing this?

I am going to Ibiza for my first holiday in a very long time next year and I’ve got autoimmune issues which mean that if I get food poisoning etc I could potentially need emergency medical treatment (I have Addison’s disease). So I want to be cautious - so I was planning to drink bottled water and use it for washing fruit / brushing teeth etc so I’m guessing I’ll avoid ice as well? Others don’t seem to be bothered at all though!

Am I being daft?!!

No they don’t

I don't know how they process the water on Ibiza, but I can confirm that when I visited it was very salty and I couldn't drink it.

You can drink the tap water in the tap water in the Balearics, however if you are concerned and want to play it safe youcan buy 5l bottles in supermarkets four about €0.60.

My DM lives in Spain, she always drinks the tap water as do I when I stay with her. It's as safe as the water in the UK. That includes ice made from it.

However, you are right that people frequently get caught out in countries with less safe tap water by having ice in their drinks in bars that is usually made with tap water. Ice is just as likely to make you ill as the water. Also be careful with salads as they are often washed in tap water.

My DF used to travel to India a lot for work. He was always really careful to only drink sealed bottled water and only eat well cooked food, no salads. However, he went to a work party one day and let his guard down, accepted a drink with ice in made from tap water. He caught hepatitis A from it and was pretty ill for a while.

The bars wouldn't put ice in the drinks if it made people unwell or they'd run out of customers
