Holiday to Jamaica - what's the point?

On a call with a friend last night, she mentioned that her sister and her partner are going to Jamaica in April next year. They are staying in a hotel that is one of three similar, and plan to spend all their time around the hotels as they don't feel safe out and about in Jamaica (I'm not sure what resort it is, my friend didn't know).

I don't see the point in this, as it is no experience of a place, culture or anything different to what you would find in any old "fully inclusive" holiday.

Has anyone been to Jamaica and felt unsafe? What do you think?

I can see the appeal, I've done three jam packed short city breaks in a row and we've said we are due a chilled holiday next with a few pool + beach days.. that said we will stay somewhere we can get out and about because I know we'll get restless after a few days. Each to their own though!

We once had an "easy" holiday in Egypt in a sort of resort hotel for tourists, far from the madding crowds, so to speak. I was 20 something weeks pregnant and didn't want to be faced with lots of men hassling/crowds as can happen there in some places.

But we did spend some time on a trip to Cairo and sometimes ate out in the local town, so it was a nice balance in the end- but good to be able to have that safe retreat.

Also from speaking to our neighbours who have been to Cape Verde and Jamaica recently- they find it really good value for money for two weeks of sun, sea, pool and good food in a better standard of hotel for the money than you would get in Europe.

We're having the opposite kind of holiday this year, lots of sightseeing and moving around and not much lying by the pool. But I don't think it takes much imagination to understand why someone might want a very relaxing holiday where they don't do much but have a very good standard of accommodation for the weather, beautiful surroundings and guaranteed sunny weather.

I don't get it either but I realise, for some people, a holiday is just about sitting in the sun by a pool or beach for 2 weeks. And that's it. Personally, I can't imagine anything more uncomfortable but AI is perceived as a desirable holiday so I just make "Ooo, fabulous" comments when anyone shows me where they're going.

I am so sad to read that Jamaica has become so unsafe .It was the first holiday I had with my husband in 1991 and we booked a flight and just backpacked all around the island .We jumped on buses and in taxis with the locals and never had a problem .It was such a beautiful place .Frenchman's Cove Beach all to ourselves. An unforgettable holiday.
