UK Passport – town of birth if born in London?

Hi —

I'm applying for my DS2's first passport and unsure what to put as the 'Town of Birth' on the passport application form, London or the specific borough he was born in.

His birth certificate doesn't specifically state a 'town of birth', but instead a 'place of birth', that being UCLH, Camden. I've read elsewhere that you should use the town/place that's on the birth certificate (so in this case, Camden).

However, DS1's birth certificate has 'place of birth' as being Whittington Hospital, Islington, whilst on his passport under 'place of birth' it says London?! Hence the confusion.

I put London to save her the hassle of writing 'Hammersmith and Fulham' for the rest of her life and it was accepted.

Just checked my passport, it just says London.

I was thinking about this the other day when I checked my childrens passports to see when they needed renewing: one (born 2012) gave the place of birth as Camberwell; the other (born 2014) said Lambeth - both were born at Kings College Hospital, Camberwell where we live (both registered at Lambeth Town Hall) - fairly sure I would have put the same on both passport applications. I guess it doesnt matter but it pays to be consistent

Mine says London (born in WC1 a billion years ago). It never occurred to me to put anything else. I don't even know what that bit of London is called!

MadeinChorley I like the idea of giving birth in the Hawley Arms 😁

Grin

My kids have Westminster on theirs.

I’m just sorting this for dc, the short form of the birth certificate has the local government district instead of the town, not sure what’s on the long version as I’m currently turning the house upside down for both that and my passport!

I put 'London' on the application form, appointment is at 12pm today so i'll report back with what ended up on DS2's passport.

My three teens were born at UCLH. Passports all say Camden.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 24/06/2022 10:43

My eldest has Tooting and the youngest has London. I have no idea why they are different as they were both born in the same hospital and registered at the same town hall.

Mine have always said Wandsworth since I was a kid and my eldest's says Lambeth - born at St Thomas' - this is what it says on the birth certs

Verite1 · 28/06/2022 11:46

My kids were born in same hospital. One passport says Westminster and one says London.

I've always wondered about this. DS1 was born at home and we live in a tiny hamlet on the edge of a town. So on his birth certificate it says 99 something road, hamlet, town. DS1 is 16 and never needed a passport so far but when he does I don't know if it should say the name of the tiny hamlet we live in or the town which is on our address but I would never have said we live there as we live over a mile from the town centre where most of the houses are.

Passport has been delivered, i put 'London' on DS2's application form for consistency with DS1, passport office put 'Camden' on the passport.

So... according to passports DS1 was born in London, DS2 Camden. Lols. 🙄
