Can a holiday company charge for cancellation - no deposit paid

Just that really.
I have holiday accommodation booked in my name for an EU country, no deposit has been made, nor credit card details provided. When I called to cancel they said they would charge me 200 euro to cancel. When I questioned this, they reduced it to 150 euro. I asked what would happen if I refused to pay and didn’t use the holiday, was told I would be treated as a no show and billed for the entire holiday - around 1200 euro.
This is all due to a 2020 holiday cancelled during the pandemic, was told at the time there was no refund only rebooking, I rebooked and they refunded the original holiday anyway. Now they want paid.
Anyone know if they can chase me for this payment?
My circumstances have changed, I don’t want the holiday and can’t afford to cancel.

If the terms say there is a cancellation fee then they can impose it regardless of whether you have paid a deposit. How likely they are to take you to actually go through the legal route to get the cancellation fee from you is a different story but it's whether you want to take that risk. I think considering they refunded you 2 years ago when they didn't have to a €150 cancellation fee doesn't sound that bad (depending how much the original cost was of course).

Thanks for the response! I suppose I could argue that I agreed to the T&Cs for the original booking, but not the rearranged booking. The original booking was exchanged for a credit note, followed by a telephone booking which I thought was using the credit note. Then 6 months ago they refunded the credit note as unused - I actually assumed at that point that the rearranged holiday was cancelled. ( I’m still not clear if the refund was in error or not.) Now they are saying that I need to pay for the holiday, or pay to cancel. I’ll maybe contact their head office, see if there is any leeway.

I would write to say officially you are cancelling the holiday- and then see if they chase you for the fee.

If they’ve refunded your money then they’ve cancelled it. They don’t have card details so how can they take the money? I suppose they could threaten legal action but it’s doubtful it would be enforced given that they’ve refunded you, it’s therefore not unreasonable of you to assume they’ve cancelled it and not rebooked it surely?

We booked a hotel room in Europe in one of the agriturismo country hotels. Despite us trying to pay a deposit way back when we first booked and later the full amount but it never happened. They just didn't provide the appropriate bank details in order for us to do it. We had to cancel the day before arrival due to circumstances beyond our control. Now they are expecting the full amount. We feel bad about it but there was nothing in their terms and conditions to say we had to pay even a cancellation fee. They don't have our card details or even our address so we wondered if others have any advice? We offered to pay a cancellation fee but they want the whole amount!

I paid the 150 euro fee in the end to cancel ours, it was pretty annoying but I didn’t have the headspace for a fight. They also had my address so didn’t want to be pursued!
But if your hotel have no address or card details, as you say, what can they do? If you haven’t paid a deposit, what proof do they have that you accepted their terms and conditions?
