Paris Metro tickets - how does it work these days?

Pretty sure this has been done recently, but the only threads I can find on 'Search' are from 2008, so not particularly helpful... Confused

Planning a trip with the family to Paris in August and wondering what happens on the Metro. I've heard about the Navigo app thing, but how does that work with a family - we all have to have the app?

I assume you can still go and buy the tickets from the machines, would that be easier for us? Is there a family ticket thing? There's two adults and a 15 year old going.

Any help would be great (plus any tips on good things to do in Paris over 5 days). Thanks ever so.

Our Eurostar sold out of carnets quite quickly, so don't pin your hopes on that. But there are plenty of ticket machines in the G du N and so many other tourists around that it doesn't feel dodgy at all.

I think there may be quite a mark-up on the carnets onboard the Eurostar, so I wouldn't be too sad if they sold out!

Our apartment was two Metro lines away from the Gare du Nord (not that far, like 3 stops and then 4 stops, but a change was involved) but we did that rather than walk in the heat with our bags. We did pop out of the station for a minute to get our bearings and there were a lot of shifty-looking guys selling cigarettes unofficially from their jackets, which I only noticed around Gare du Nord and nowhere else in Paris, so I'm guessing that means the area around the station is a bit dodgy, yes.

Ah ok yes I had a vague memory it was like that, we will get the metro and you're right I hadn't factored in the heat and bags.

stillherenow · 01/08/2022 16:50

I've just found an old post on trip advisor saying you can buy carnets at st Pancras - anyone know if that's still true?

GentlyGentlyOhDear · 01/08/2022 20:40

Thanks @Janek for the info on children's fares. Will carry the two year old and DH can carry the pushchair!

Janek · 01/08/2022 21:05

There are a lot of steps and escalators in the metro so that's probably the best idea!

kavalkada · 02/08/2022 06:19

I always take weekly Navigo Decouvert card. Works good if you're staying from munday till sunday, not ih you come at friday and leave tuesday.

Oriunda · 02/08/2022 18:42

Tariff reduit is kids 10 and below. You'll need to use the larger gate (usually to one side) which opens slowly so that you can get kids through. I've rarely seen Metro gates manned.

Oriunda · 02/08/2022 18:44

Daytime is fine to walk around. Friends were staying in Canal St Martin area and it was much easier to walk rather than change lines.

BugsInTheBed · 02/08/2022 18:54

Ooh the perfect thread - Can I ask a question?

We're staying in Disneyland Paris and hoping to have a day in Paris before our DLP time. I think what we want is a mobilis zone 1-5? And I think this covers our train in and then tubes and is 17.80 Euro each? A bit like the london underground day ticket.

But then there is a visite card which is more? Why would you get that?

Fiddlersgreen · 02/08/2022 18:55

We recently got back and we bought a 5 day pass for each of us. We used the metro quite a bit but I don’t know if this would be the cheapest option but was certainly the easiest for us.
Bought them on the machine (you can change the language to English) and think they cost about €38 per adult

NeonK · 02/08/2022 18:56

Recently back from Paris, we bought a Paris Visite 3 day unlimited ticket from the ticket machine. About 25 euros per adult. I was vey confused by the carnets and navigo (I'm easily confused by a lot of things 😂) so this was easy (no idea if it worked out cheaper or not, but still happy if we paid a little bit more for convenience).

Fiddlersgreen · 02/08/2022 20:56

Great minds @NeonK 😂

BugsInTheBed · 02/08/2022 21:21

Visite seems a rip off for tourists to me.

1 day Visite 1-5 25€
1 day Mobilis 1-5 17.80€

Huge difference for us ! Google suggests no benefit to the visite (other than discount for some places?) And more that the mobilis isnt advertised as well - but I found it okay so seems bizarre to have 2 tickets doing the same thing but charging tourists more!?

PuppyMonkey · 03/08/2022 08:23

I’m following all the latest replies thanks so much all. I thought it was just me being thick and struggling to follow how it all works and which is the best way etc etc but it seems there are differences in opinion ! Grin

I'll try and post on this thread while I’m actually there to do a live update on whether the Carnet or the Navigo or the Visite or whatever is working for us, or if we’ve abandoned the public transport system altogether in favour of walking everywhere!

Teen DS and I are in Paris at the moment for a few days! We got off the Eurostar and went straight to the tourist office and got the 3 day visite catds.

DS just wants to ride all the modes of transport here (not particularly interested in the famous landmarks as we've been to Paris before) , so hopefully we'll get our moneys worth just bobbing about!

I hope you have fun @MackenCheese Smile
