Why aren't Canaries hotter in July?

Stupid question, but... I've been to some of the Canary Islands at Easter and also in January. Really lovely and warm! So I've always thought it would be far too warm in summer. Was just comparing some temperatures online and it had average temps of 29 in Benalmadena and Bodrum in July, and only 24 in the Canaries... anyone know why it isn't hotter, being so far south?
(I'm not wanting it hotter by the way, I'm trying to work out if it would be tolerable for us or not!) thank you

They are in the middle of the Atlantic (almost) surrounded by relatively cool water.

The sun is very strong though. Don’t be deceived but the lower temperatures.

By, not but.

It’s simple, the Canaries are closer to the equator. The closer to the equator you are the more stable your temperature and the length of your days/nights.

Which island were you looking at? Tenerife is more like 28° - 29 °c in summer. I found it too hot in October. The north of the island was much cooler though.

Lanzarote always seems to have a nice breeze. Still hot though

Footbelle · 11/06/2022 23:37

Lanzarote can be in the 30's in the middle of the day.

Have you ever been to Lanzarote in winter? We are thinking of going for an active holiday in December but want fairly decent weather

Footbelle · 11/06/2022 23:58

Been in Lanzarote in Oct and it was plenty hot enough for me. It does get a winter though, so if you want heat, I wouldn't go in Dec. If you want better weather than the UK and some sun and maybe 20°c, December would be fine. I think Gran Canaria is a bit warmer though.

Thank you, this is making more sense to me! The equator bit especially. I find the temperature in Spain in the summer fine, Turkey and Greece were too hot.
dc won't want to sit under an umbrella at the pool, they will want to be going about swimming etc so can't hide from the sun!

It’s 43 degrees in Spain at the moment, which is pretty hot.

Just back from Tenerife. Hot (28) but v windy so feels cooler. So many people caught out (no sunscreen) because it doesn't 'feel' hot. Ouch (and yikes, peeling skin...!)
However if you wear sunscreen it's great. The main attraction for me is NO mosquitoes.

We've been to Lanzarote and Tenerife a few times between November and February.

If you go to the south of either island, the weather is better and in our experience, it's mostly been good, and generally perfect for cycling or hiking as it's usually not too hot, mostly been around low to mid 20 C and we haven't had that much rain, maybe the odd shower or cloudy day. You'd be quite unlucky to get that much rain that it dominates the holiday.

You need to be very careful with the sun in the Canaries. As I said before, the cooler temperatures are deceptive and it is very easy to burn. It’s an African sun

I've wimped out in the end and booked mainland Spain!
thank you all for tips though, I think I'd like to head there in October 23.

Been in Tenerife for the last ten days. Sleeping with one sheet over me, the ceiling fan on all night and sliding bedroom patio doors ajar. It will be hotter in July/August and humid. The mosquitos appear to be getting going now also. We have been on the beach until 8pm in the evenings. Carefull what you wish for. Cannot answer your question though.

motogirl · 12/06/2022 17:30

The ocean moderates the temperature. To those asking about temperatures in winter, the weather is pleasant compared to weather in Northern Europe but wasn't hot, around 22 ish in the middle of the day but by 4pm you need to be leaving the pool area to fetch a cardigan. It's definitely the easiest and cheapest reliable winter sun destination from here but if you are looking for tropical temperatures you need to fly long haul (if they sort out the current troubles Sri Lanka is excellent in January

Branleuse · 13/06/2022 11:01

Tenerife is called the island of eternal spring, as it doesnt dip much below 20 in winter and doesnt go much above 30 in summer.
Lots of Spanish from the mainland use it to get away from the mainland spanish heat in the summer, as the atlantic breeze keeps it cooler
