Jet 2 - under 2 own seat?

Catred4 · 04/06/2022 18:50

Hi all, we're flying with Jet2 in two weeks to Lanzarote. My son is 20 months old and a big, hyperactive toddler. The rules are that under 2s can't have their own seat unless you put them in a car seat which would be impossible?!

Anyone got any experience of either dealing with a 4+ hour flight with a toddler on your lap, or managing to get an extra seat with Jet2 even though they don't allow it!

I did call up and they said no but I'm considering calling again with a different tact - asking for an extra seat for me maybe?

No under 2s get their own seat on any aircraft for safety reasons. The best you can hope for is that there'll be a spare seat near you that you can use once you've taken off.

kej567890 · 04/06/2022 19:12

You can buy a seat for an under 2, you will probably have to phone the airline. They will have to sit on your lap for take off and landing but can use their own seat otherwise

Caspianberg · 04/06/2022 19:12

This is incorrect. An under 2 can have own seat, it’s called a comfort seat, and can only be booked via phone/ direct.
They only need car seat to stay in seat start to finish. Otherwise they sit on your lap for take off and landing ( basically when seatbelt sign is on)

I just flew 2 months ago with Ds when he was 22-23 months. He had own seat

Catred4 · 04/06/2022 19:16

@Caspianberg it may be incorrect but that is what the airline said to me when I asked for an extra seat 😩. Who did you fly with?

Caspianberg · 04/06/2022 19:22

@Catred4 - British airways, Ryanair, Lufthansa and Easyjet all with under 2 and own seat in the last 6 months.

Catred4 · 04/06/2022 19:23

@Caspianberg that's great! I'll have to try Jet2 again hopefully a different operator can help because

It basically doesn’t matter. It’s a comfort seat, and adult can book one too ( basically just booking two full price seats and paying to select seat). So if jet 2 really don’t allow one on infant name, just get one on your name and you have booked yourself two seats next to each other for ‘comfort’. Infant sits on your lap for take off and landing and can be put next to you in spare seat whilst flying

Catred4 · 04/06/2022 19:28

Good advice, thanks I'll go down that route!

They mean that on take off and landing. Regardless of how many seats you've booked, under 2s have to sit on your lap or in a car seat for take off and landing. But you are allowed to book an extra place so there's a bit more space during the flight for them to play. I assume the person you spoke to didn't understand the rules and was quoting them wrongly. Try again, hopefully you get someone else on the phone who actually knows what they're talking about.

Dinoboymama · 04/06/2022 20:47

I searched on twitter jet2s replies to some people asking about comfort seats is to book a flight and use the name comfort seat for the seat you wish to have free.

Mrsmch123 · 04/06/2022 22:49

I booked a seat for my 11 month old. I was told he must be on our lap for takeoff and landing and any time the seat belt sign is on. Which I'm happy enough with. This was with tui

motogirl · 04/06/2022 23:12

I flew with mine a lot, I had faa approved car seats (BA to the USA)

Hollipolly · 05/06/2022 07:07

I never knew this was a thing! Far too late for but wish I had of known when DS was a baby

Caspianberg · 05/06/2022 07:13

It’s actually very annoying that you can’t just book this option directly online with your booking. It’s a full price seat, so the airline isn’t loosing out, and it’s just comfier for families to travel if they have space to lay baby down or let 1-2 year old sit and play a while.
I think my Ryanair flight was only £65 return for adult, and they charge £25 each way for an infant on lap ( ie £50)

beachcitygirl · 05/06/2022 09:18

You absolutely can buy a seat for an under 2 year old.
They do have to be on your lap or in car seat for take off, turbulence & landing. But you can buy as many seats as you like. Phone tickets sales of relevant airline

TheRoadToRuin · 05/06/2022 13:37

You can book and pay for a seat for under twos, I always did for mine. You have to have them on your lap for take off and landing though

Catred4 · 05/06/2022 14:20

I called up and asked for a comfort seat and managed to get an extra seat under his name woohoo! Thanks everyone! Just needed to speak to someone else I think!

Hi, sorry to jump on here. I have an extra seat for my 22 month old with jet 2, did you have to check in for it or what? We have a holiday booking and then a separate extra seat booking. I'm not sure what to do. Thank you

tiddletoddle400 · 14/06/2022 08:13

Literally got back from holiday with Jet2 yesterday with a 17MO on my lap for a 4 hour flight. Your child will have to go on your lap. Take lots and lots of snacks and fill an IPad/device with episodes of their favourite show. I also bought lots of brand new sensory toys. I don't believe there is very much wiggle room in regard to having an under 2-year old in their own seat as it's all down to safety.

I have to say jet2 were very good and staff very friendly.

tiddletoddle400 · 14/06/2022 08:15

Oh wow didn't know about these comfort seats!!! Will have to look into it for next time.

Catred4 · 14/06/2022 09:11

@PandaPink well I'm not totally sure. We go on Friday. We've checked in normally (as in my ticket is checked in and he is a +1 on mine) but it doesn't let me check in on his separate ticket because it says his date of birth must be wrong because he's under 2 and under 2s don't have their own tickets 🙄. I presume because he's checked in through me anyway, it's okay because I can't imagine they'd let him check in twice anyway! Will let you know on Friday! When are you going?

PandaPink · 14/06/2022 09:22

We go on Monday to Majorca, the extra seat is booked for a 2 yr old but obviously the same as you he's under 2. The extra seat is booked under "extra seat" then the surname lol

As you can see by the other responses and from the fact OP has now booked a seat for her dc that is entirely not the case. It's a bit more of a faff to book and they either must sit in a car seat or on your lap for take off and landing but it's always been possible and would always be my choice wherever I could afford it. 4 hours with a wriggling toddler on your lap isn't fun!
OP I'd call them re the check in issue as they may be able to/need to do it manually. Otherwise you might have to wait at the check in desk rather than go through fast track for the additional seat.

PandaPink · 19/06/2022 08:30

@Catred4 How did you get on wig the extra seat after you go to the airport? They didn't need you to check in or anything? Nobody had taken it? Lol
